Sadak
(English meaning Road)
Director: Mahesh Bhatt
India : 1991 :
With: Sadashiv Amrapurkar as Maharani; Sanjay Dutt as Ravi; Pooja Bhatt as Pooja; Deepak Tijori as Gotya; Chanda as Neelima Azim; Avtar Gill as Salim Bhai; Pankaj Dheer as Inspector Irani
This movie is about a young man's fight against society to get his girlfriend out of a brothel and spend his life with her.
Ravi (Sanjay Dutt) is a taxi driver. One day he goes to a brothel with his best friend Gotya (Deepak Tijori) to meet his fiancée Chanda (Neelima) and there Ravi sees a young prostitute Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) who was sold to the brothel's owner by her uncle - the brothel's owner is a transvestite/Hijra/eunuch named Maharani (Sadashiv Amrapurkar). He falls in love with her and offers money to Maharani to free her. Maharani refuses. Ravi and Goyta attack Maharani with a knife and run away with Pooja and Chanda. Soon after, Gotya and Chanda are killed by Maharani's men, but Ravi and Pooja escape although Pooja is captured again later. Eventually Ravi takes revenge from Maharani and frees Pooja from the brothel.
The main point of this movie is to portray the brothel owner as a cruel, abnormal and insensitive person, which they normally are. The fact that he is an eunuch is incidental.
Watch this movie for typical Bollywood kind of drama and melodious songs. Manish

This film is a typical Ken Russell's extravaganza and revolves around Oscar Wilde being invited to a whorehouse to see a bordello decadent version of his banned play "Salome". If you like Ken Russell's films you will enjoy this one ! Phillip |

This is Pasolini's last film (too bad it got made !) and is about a group of Fascists in World War II who were so powerful that they were able to use young people for horrible S/M sex games which sometime ended in murder. A horrible film to watch ! but a friend of mine told me that I must tell you this is a very important picture none-the-less ! so see it and decide for yourselves.... Phillip |

Reel Snapshot: This is a cult classic and is about an evil poet who assumes the identity of a homosexual in the 19th century. Sounds strange but most of the Fassbinders movies sound strange but are really very good ! Phillip |
