Raspberry Reich

(Brazilian Title: Reich Framboesa)
Directed by: Bruce La Bruce
Germany: 2004: 90 min
With: Susanne Sachsse, Daniel Bätscher, Andreas Rupprecht, Dean Stathis, Daniel Fettig

A very strange movie about a Baader-Meinhof inspired guerilla-group led by a woman, Gudrun. She believes the world must be sexually liberated before the final revolution will be possible. Her 5 male helpers are commanded to have sex with each other. They are supposed to be straight, but they don't seem too worried about it. Then they kidnap the son of a rich financier. Gudrun and the boys read political pamphlets and shouts propaganda throughout every scene, while having sex or playing with guns. The actors don' really act, it's like watching the cast of PINK FLAMINGOS all over again!
If you don't want to offended by hard-core gay sex scenes, don't watch this. It's not a porno flick, but
la Bruce uses a lot of close ups of sex, which would qualify this film as porn. There is a funny scene in a parking lot at the end, and it all ends in a Hamburg night-club. Funny but very dirty!

Alternative review:
Patrick, son of one of the richest bankers in Germany, is kidnapped by a group that calls itself the Raspberry Reich. The group is led by Gudrun, a charismatic young leader who obliges Reich members to have homosexual relationships with each other. She does this as a way of reaching her revolutionary goals and destroying the bourgeois logic of monogamous, heterosexual marriages. Patrick falls in love with one of his kidnappers and starts robbing banks while the Raspberry Reich is falling apart. Selected for the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and exhibited in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival 2004.
A polemic movie from the polemic director The Raspberry Reich has some hetero and lots of homosexual sexual explicit scenes.

Rebel Without A Cause

With: Sal Mineo as Plato, James Dean as Jim Stark and Natalie Wood as Jim´s girlfriend:

I love this movie as it was filmed at a time when gay love stories never made it to the screen and also because sexy hunk James Dean is in the film along with Sal Mineo (who claimed to love both men and women - but i suspect the men got the most out of him). It is a teenage film and revolves around the fact that Plato is lonely and in love with Jim and Jim is in love with his girlfriend a lot and possibly with Plato a little. The film is filmed so that you can write any story line you like in your mind! and then you are sure your version is the correct one ! For me Plato loved Jim and Jim loved him a little back.
Note: all three stars of this film died tragically.

OH my my,  this film is complicated but good ! It also has drag star RuPaul in it as a man (?) It is about a new Aids drug which extends the lives of people living with Aids, but the bad part is the Drug company has put the price so high that most people can not afford it. Then a group of friends come up with a plan. They will rob pharmacies to get the medication and distribute it to the people who can not afford it. The police are hot on their trail and things go bad.
Note: this is really a comedy about aids and contains a Gay Robin Hood story- line.

Ormond as Thug, David Fine as Homeless Man on Range Rover :

This film which is a musical based on the stage play (which they say is based on Puccini's 'La Boheme'.  It is basically a film about friends who are struggling to survive in NYC in spite of no money and having AIDS ( or being HIV +) but still living out their dreams played by Jesse L. Martin) who meets and moves in with an HIV-positive drag queen singing lover Angel (played by Wilson Jermain Heredia - who plays the part 150 % wonderfully). Then there is a bitch called Maureen who is trying to become a star and her Harvard-educated lawyer called Joanne who is her lesbian lover. There is more to the story line than this so If you like musicals see this one especially since it has really good gay characters in it.

Directed: Anthony Harvey
UK: 1980: Lesbian drama
With: Liv Ullmann

Made for TV-movie about two women, one a widow, the other the dead husbands mistress. They find love in each other's arms, first for comfort, then for kicks. This story-line was considered quite racy back in 1980, but well, we have matured a bit, haven't we? The actresses do well with their parts, but Ullmann has certainly been in better form than this. A bit dead on the ground, but interesting as early lesbian portrayals in the movies. (pre-Desert hearts)

Ritz, The

Director: Richard Lester
USA: 1976: 91 Minutes: Comedy / Gay /sauna:

This is a very funny film and is based on a Broadway play by Terrence McNally. The story is about a old heavy-set straight guy who is married to a mafia bosses daughter. On his dying bed the father wants the son in law to be killed - which the son in law over hears and runs for his life ! He gets a taxi and asks to be taken the place where the mafia will not find him and this turns out to be a gay bath house. What happens next is pure fun. With a chubby chaser tying to get him into bed. then Rita Moreno is about to give a kitchy show at the baths when she thinks the guy is a producer and wants him to produce her and meanwhile a detective (played by Treat Williams) is trying to find the son in law plus F. Murray Abraham's character is trying to help the straight man score a gay bed partner - yes i know it all sounds crazy and that is why you should see this great film.... no i won't tell you how it turns out - see it!

River made to drown in

With: Richard Chamberlain, James Duval and Ute Lemper

Wow first a coming out book by Richard and now a staring role as Thaddeus Mackenzie, a gay lawyer who is dying of AIDS. He decides to visit an ex of his called Allen Hayden (who is now almost straight. He was a hustler before and therefor lived with Thaddeus. He is now a struggling almost straight artist and having an affair with EVA played by Ute Lemper.
Thaddeus has one thing to do before dying he wants to find another street hustler who he was involved with. He asks/ begs Allen to help him find this youth called Jamie.
Rather dark, lonely and sad film but Richard does a great job and pulls the whole thing off plus manages to keep you interested - see the film..

Director: Rémi Lange
France: 2003: 70 mins: In French with English subtitles:
With: Karim Tarek, Mustapha Khadar, Riyad Echahi, Zakariya Gouram, Farid Tali :

In this French film there is a difficult story line, Karim is a guy who thinks he is a straight man and who is from an Algerian – French background decides to do a study of Islamic homosexuality and make a documentary film about gay Muslims.
He travels near and far to get the interviews and meets Farid (an openly gay flight attendant). The two become “friends” and Farid seems to see through the “straightness” of Karim. His girlfriend discovers their “friendship” and leaves him. He is then free to see if Farfid fits into his life and if he really could love him. They explore each other and the relationship on camera making this a must see film if you like to discover what it is like to be from other cultures and what those cultures are like.

This made for TV film has a unique situation: two men have aids and need a place to live their last days and both have aids. Jim is a heterosexual who is loud and hates gays and Bill  is a well educated gay man who wants to be alone to die but not at his parents. They are assigned a room together and all sparks fly, until they discover that despite their differences they are becoming friends and need each other. A very moving film. With: James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder, Kip Pardue, Jessica Biel, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Swoosie Kurtz, Faye Dunaway, Eric Stoltz, Kate Bosworth :

This film is based on the best seller book of the same name. It is about the lives of very well to do students and their loves and conquests. The main reason it is listed here is that there is a gay story line. Paul is a bisexual who is very attracted to Sean (played by James Van der Beek from Dawson's Creek). Sean is a drug dealer who is a straight guy proud of his sexual conquests but none the less Paul sees Sean as his object of desire (maybe because he can not have him ?) There is a scene where the two guys  dance in their underwear to a George Michael song. OH well he can always hope to get his man but it is highly unlikely and the relationship will have to stay in his dreams.
