Numbers.

5 lies
(orginal title: 5 løgner )

Director: Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen
Norway 2007
With: Michalis Koutsogiannakis, Kim Sørensen

Strange, but effective slice-of-life in the style of a Robert Altman/ Paul Thomas Anderson kaleidoscopic movie. The lives of 5 people is trailed through one day. One of them is a gay, middle-aged man with a very young secret lover. The young man loves him, but can’t say it out loud. The older man seems to be content with the sex and doesn’t want (or need) anything more.
It’s a little bit sad, a little bit crazy, but never boring. The director, who finally got the chance to make an official feature film, is a cult figure in Norway, having made several self-financed “trash” movies with titles like “Planet porn” and worse on video! 5 lies is a nice try, but don’t get full points. The acting is sometimes flat and uninspired, and the script is sometimes just weird. Still, it’s nicely directed, and really worth seeing.

Director: Ramón Salazar
Spain 2005 - 113 Mins:
With: Mónica Cervera, Pablo Puyol, Miguel O´Dogherty, Concha Galan, Pilar BardemRossy De Palma

What would be reason for pride for most men is a torment for Adolfo. Male prostitute and transvestite, also known as Marieta, he dreams of being rid of his masculine sexual organ and becoming the woman he always longed to be. The problem is that this object he so repulses also represents his principal means of income and survival on the streets of Madrid. While he still cannot afford the sex change operation, Marieta lives in the company of bizarre characters of the Madrid underworld and makes the most of his narcoleptic dozes to slip into a world of singing and dancing, where everything seems easier.
Note : Selected for the official competition of the 2005 Locarno Film Festival.

Ramón Salazar was born in Malaga, Spain, in 1963. His first feature film, Stones (2002), was selected for the official competition of the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and earned him a nomination for the Goya prize for best debut director, which to him being earmarked as a possible successor to Pedro Almodóvar. 20 Centimeters is his second feature. 20 centímetros is a very funny musical with some "skin".

37 og en halv
(lit. trans: 37 and a half)

Director: Vibeke Idsøe
Norway 2005: Comedy
With: Helen Vikstedt, Kåre Conradi, Pia Tjelta

Directed by a woman, starring mostly women, it’s about Selma, who’s pushing 40 and midlife crisis. Not good.
This is a “chick” comedy. I went to see it for the SOLE reason that the sexiest Norwegian on legs (Kåre Conradi) plays the gay friend, Sigurd.
Right.....Of course, every single woman has a gay friend. You knew that. When they marry, they dump ‘em. At least in the movies.
Conradi’s part is a good one, he wears swell clothes, has a nice looking lover, and wants to make all his friends’ wishes come true. Sweet guy! Selma’s wish is to become a magazine writer, so Sigurd goes to work... The feel-good effect kicks in about half way through . The first part sags terribly, but Kåre Conradi looks so good you easily forgive that. Kåre the man is also very gay friendly in real life, as evidenced in a “How-gay-are-you” quiz in the Norwegian queer magazine BLIKK. I love him.  (..Hope my boyfriend doesn’t read this)

101 Rent Boys
(AKA: 101 Taxi Boys )

Director: Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato
USA: 2000: 85 Mins

Have you looked at the ads of those hunks in the gay magazines and thought about phoning? What will they do? What won't they do? Are they really as hung as they say they are? Over the course of a year, documentary filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato interviewed 101 male hustlers who work along LA's infamous Santa Monica Boulevard. They were each paid $50 for their time, and while the clock ticks they discuss their feelings on love, money and sex. Along the way, they reveal some very intimate stories about their lives.

101 Reykjavik

Directed by Balthazar Kormàkur
Iceland: 2000: Lesbian and bisexual characters
With: Victoria Abril, Hilmir Snær Guðnason

You should see this well made Icelandic comedy! A surprise hit-movie from the northernmost country in Europe. It's about Hlynur, a good for nothing 28-year old slacker living at home with his mother, all the while partying, drinking, sleeping around, living off social security and not trying to better himself. One day Lola, a Spanish flamenco dancer and a friend of his mother's, moves in with them. And wouldn't you know...Lola soon goes to bed with Hlynur. Silly girl. Then things get really weird. It turns out that not only is his mother a closet lesbian, but she is in love with Lola. And now Lola is pregnant with Hlynur's child. As is his steady girlfriend.
Ever had one of those days?!
Like I said, you should see this, if only to get a glimpse of the hot Icelandic disco scene, some great acting and the thrill of watching a family this strange getting it together, somehow. Apparently, it can be done.

Director: Mark Christopher

With: Ryan pe, Sela Ward, Mike Myers, Breckin Meyer, Neve Campbell, Salma Hayek, Sherry Stringfield, Heather Matarazzo, Daniel Lapaine, Louis Negin, Sean Sullivan, Lauren Hutton, Mark Ruffalo, Cindy Crawford.

This is a look in the days of the Studio 54 when it was at the top, also the story of the 19 year old Shane played by Ryan pe and Steve Rubell (bisexual) the clubs owner who was there from the creation to the end of this disco club. I liked seeing the story behind the success and reliving the 70´s again!

100% menneske
(lit.trans: 100 % human)

Directors:  Trond Winterkjær and Jan Dalchow :
Norway 2005 : Documentary

A sort of “Christine Jorgenson story” for the New Milennium featuring Monica Voilaas Myklebust, a Norwegian girl  who was born male, and named Morten. She realizes early on that her body and her mind are two separate entities, and turning 20 she decides to undergo a sexual adjustment operation.

This much discussed documentary is quite unusual, regularly pausing for soft-focus dream-sequences and offbeat musical numbers!  Mostly, though, it’s Monica herself talking to the camera, 6 months before and 12 months after her operation. Her tales of being mocked and taunted as a child, just for being different, is sadly typical. We also meet her family who feel sure that without this operation, Monica would probably not have been able to live on..

By the way, she does her own singing! The critics were a bit bemused by the musical numbers, but generally this went down well with Norwegian audiences, and was shown on the big gay/ lesbian movies festivals of the world. It is also shown to youngsters on Norwegian secondary schools, by liberal teachers (like yours truly..he, he)
