Naked Civil Servant; The
(The Autobiography of Quentin Crisp)
Director : Jack Gold
UK: 1975: 80 minutes.: Gay Biography
With: John Hurt as Quentin Crisp, Shane Briant as Noirma, Liz Geghardt as Art student, Colin Higgins, Patricia Hodge as Ballet teacher, Lloyd Lamble as Mr Crisp, Tanley Lebor as Mr. Pole, John Rhys-Davies, Joan Ryan as Mrs. Crisp,Katherine Schofield as Mrs. Pole:

Not very often is a gay biography filmed but the life of Quentin Crisp was. He was ahead of his time and dressed and acted the way he wanted to be - very swishy and almost as a women. He had the courage to go out into the normal life this way and thus was a crusader before the gay movement. This is well filmed and there are great scenes - especially the one where he is dressed up as a women and all the sailors are flirting with him. The film traces his life from a very early age to old age. He is still alive and now living in New York City. Phillip

Naked Lunch, The
Director: David Cronenberg
Canada/UK: 1992: 115 minutes.: Bisexual / transvestites / Drugs
With: Peter Weller as Bill Lee, Ian Holm as Tom Frost, Julian Sands as Yves Cloquet, Roy Scheider as Doctor Benway, Monique Mercure as Fadela , Nicholas Campbell as Hank, Michael Zelniker as Martin, Robert A. Silverman as Hans, Joseph Scorsiani as Kiki, Peter Boretski as Creature Voices / Exterminator #2, Yuval Daniel as Hafid, John Friesen as Hauser, Sean McCann as O'Brien. Howard Jerome as A.J. Cohen, Michael Caruana as Pawnbroker, Kurt Reis as Exterminator #1, Justin Louis as Exterminator #3 , Julian Richings as Exterminator #4, Jim Yip as The Chink, Claude Aflalo as Forgeman, Laurent Hazout as Interzone Boy, Joe Dimambro as Interzone Boy and Ornette Coleman, Denardo Coleman and Barre Phillips as The Ornette Coleman Trio:

This film title is taken from the novel NAKED LUNCH: which was written by William Burroughs- although the story is nothing like the book. It is about Bill Lee (Peter Weller) who was an exterminator and became addicted to the pesticides used in his work to kill bugs. He hallucinatiates throughout the film. He accidentally kills his wife and must go underground to avoid the police. Not really a true adaptation of writer William S. Burrough's life story and drug addiction novel but a very strange story and hard to explain due to all the hallucinations mixed into the story including lots of oversize bugs. This film is not my cup of tea - oh well if you like horror films you might like this one I did not ! I rather watch a heterosexual Si-Fi film !  Phillip

There are also tons of gay jokes in this film also... Phillip

I was very surprised at how good this film is ! It is from the BBC in Scotland and is one of the newer gay films which are really good. This is the story of Tom who is a younger man with Aids. He lives in London with his older lover Ira who is an American. The two share an interest in music as one loves music and the other works at a Radio Station. The illness is getting to him and his memory so he decides to go to Glasgow and visit his family (he has not been to see them for the past 10 years). His family does not like his lifestyle and only his mom is nice to him. The visit goes bad from the beginning and shows the stupidity of a smaller city and their hatred of anything different then them. His brother Ian and his family are terrible to him and so his lover Ira comes to get him and take him back to his real family - his friends in London. Tom takes a turn for the worse due to this visit and like magic he gets better and has a reprieve. The relationships in this movie after really well defined and the love relationship is a stable good one. This film is a must on your lists to see !  Phillip

Hum this film seems to be based on Peter Pan but with a gay twist. There is an amusement park called Neverland where there are very gay fairies. There is the leader and a Indian drag queen and even the repair crew for the park are gay and all look as if they stepped out of a leather porno film. Then there is hook who is their leader and to top it off there is a teenage who wants nothing better than not to grow up and to top that he is the leader of a group of pretty homeless boys. OK if this all sounds tooo much for you - just see the film and relive Peter Pan but VERY GAY this time! Just sit back and enjoy!  Phillip

With: John Angel, Norman Bateson, Philip Beckett, Frank Dilbert as American, Maureen Dolan as Pat Rachel, Nicholas James, Robert Merrick as John, Clive Peters as Peter, Peter Radmall as Artist, Ken Robertson as Jim Stuart, Craig Turton as Neal and Tony Westrope as Mike:

I really enjoyed this film as it is about a gay school teacher who is in the closet and looks in all the wrong places for love. His day to day struggle with gay life and being a teacher is very realistic. There is a wonderful scene when he comes out to his School class. Rather outdated music and disco's but gay life is shown through his eyes and finally he discovers that a person close to him is not all the bad !!

Sorry the cast is larger than my film review ! :

This is the story of a young ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky who had a mentor / impresario called Sergei Diaghilev (Russian Ballet). It traces their relationship from very early on then through their ballet successes and then up to their breakup due to a young ballerina Romola de Pulsky who set her sights on getting Nijinsky. She gets him to marry her and thus makes Serge Diaghilev mad enough to break off the relationship with Vaslav Nijinsky. Both Sergei Diaghilev and Romola de Pulsky use and dominate the life of Vaslav Nijinsky and this conflict starts the down fall of Nijinsky into madness.
Note: this film is very well filmed including beautiful recreations of the Russian ballets. Phillip

No One Sleeps
Directer: Jochen Hick
Germany: 2000: 108 minutes: filmed in English with German subtitles: Gay Aids Thriller:
With: Tom Wlaschiha, Irit Levi, Jim Thalman, Richard Conti:

I am a bit bias about this film as I feel in "lust" with Tom Wlaschiha who plays Dr. Stefan Hein. He has everything a "Euroboy" should have and more :-). and that accent in English melted me - wow !!!

But now back to this film, It is a well made thriller about a Dr. Stefan Hein who is a quite young research Doctor and had come to S.F. to prove his late fathers theory about Aids having been made in the lab as a Bio-weapon by the Americans in the 70´s - ok ok - we have heard this all before but that doesn't stop this film from using the theory in an interesting way.

When Dr. Hein (or Stefan as I will call him from now on) arrives in S.F. and presents this theory and then proceeds to try and prove it -  there starts a chain of murders happening to men with long time aids.

Your are not able to guess who did the crimes as the plot goes in many directions - from government agencies, to an opera lover killer of the opera Turandot and then to the gay sex clubs. Stefan dominates the film and (lucky for me) is in most scenes of the film. I will not spoil the end for you but right up till almost the end I did NOT know who was doing the killing !

The sex scenes are handled hotly between Stefan and the nasty guy who does not want to be his lover. The S.F. photography is very good and the look at the California sex club scenes are hot and interesting. Then last but not least the very good performance of the Inspector Louise Tolliver (played by Irit Levi and who has a voice which will cut at your ears) helps makes this movie a MUST see new film.

This film is very definitely worth going to .... So take your friend, your lover or sex partner and enjoy the 108 minutes of this film... I loved every minute of it....  Phillip

No ordinary love
Director: Doug Witkins
USA 1994

Closeted landlord Kevin lives with his weird tenants, an orphaned teenager, a male stripper and a girl playing in an all-girl rock band. Another tenant has recently died in a drunken fall. None of these people pay rent.
Kevin's mum, who owns the house, threatens Kevin with eviction if he doesn't get some paying tenants who can help her meet the mortgages. Fat bank clerk Ben is recruited as the missing tenant, and all seems well...

Then Vince, the teenager, develops a crush on his latino friend Ramon, while Andy, the male stripper, comforts Ramon's slutty mother. Ben, meanwhile, is not what he appears to be, and Kevin marries the female rock singer to please mommy, even though he is still in love with the dead tenant. Kevin is one stupid guy.
Then things turn nasty...in a very strange way..
Trying to outguess this script is patently impossible. No ordinary love plays like something written by John Waters, directed by Andy Warhol/ Gregg Araki and produced by Aaron Spelling, on a shoestring. The totally unsuitable music score leans heavily on Dallas, Melrose place and those icky Chris Columbus comedies. Swirling violins, moody pianos and "funny" pizzicato music whenever fat Ben enters the picture.
The plot is so scrappy it falls apart early on. A lot of interplay between the characters, sure, but nothing is even vaguely related to anything else. The "acting" is brutally bad. The schizofrenic mood never settles. From crime-caper to tender love story via melodrama and mystery back to social critique and satire on family life.
No ordinary love has one thing going for it: It's never dull. Terrible, yes, but never dull. I would choose this over any Chris Columbus movie, anytime. And - it's a gay movie, as well. Sort of. I could never figure it out. Yngvar

Norman Is That You ?
Director / Producer: George Schlatter
USA: 1976: 92 minutes: Gay Comedy
With: Dennis Dugan as Garson Hobart, Michael Warren as Norman Chambers, Pearl Bailey as Beatrice Chambers Tamara Dobson as Audrey, Redd Foxx as Ben Chambers George Furth, Jayne Meadows as Adele, Barbara Sharma, Vernee Watson-Johnson as Melody and a guest appearance of Wayland Flowers and Madame:

It is the story of Norman a black guy who is 23 and his lover Garson who is a very cute swishy queen live together but the parents of Normal (played by black stars Pearl Bailey and Redd Foxx) do not know that their hunky son is gay. The father comes for a visit and then the mother also causing lots of trouble for Norman and Garson but also lots of laughs for the audience. I really liked the film and in the end (in spite of all the laughs at the gay lifestyle) the gay couple wins in the end. So just see the film - remember it is 1976 and have a good laugh.
Note: this film is from 1976 and tries to do a balance act between laughing at gays but at the same time offering looks into a gay stable relationship (as this was made in 1976 don't expect any kissing or affection) although there is a very funny scene in bed. It was also one of the first gay films to show an relationship between a black gay and a white gay, which was very progressive at the time. Don't be too critical and just have a watch.
It took films like this to break the ice for the modern 1990´s gay films. Phillip

USA: 1987

Tight, well-made thriller in the Hitchcock mode where Costner plays a navy officer working for the American Ministry of Defense. He is wrongly accused of murdering his mistress, and has to prove his innocence before the law closes in. It's difficult to reveal the gay content without spoiling the suspense; let's just say this film shows that gays have infiltrated even the high offices of the Pentagon! A must see for the sexy performance of Costner alone. This is a underrated movie.

In this documentary about and with Rudolf Nureyev I was reminded of the time when I was a young boy and had a wall full of Rudolf Nureyev pictures with poses of David and other semi nudes. He was a beautiful man but I never understood why he was such a strange character.
I saw him a few times in New York City but I never asked for his autograph – it was enough to see him live. Then I in Vienna I saw the ballet Romeo and Juliet and I was surprised by his great performance.
Now comes this documentary and I can finally get a look into the real man. He is a Diva in the film but so what- he is a star…… I enjoyed this film and can recommend it to you but do not be offended that his is not open about being gay… I guess that is his Russian background. I hope one day a lover or close friend will do a tell all movie as I am sure there is much to tell ! Phillip
