Magnolia
USA: 2000: 188 mins:
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
With: Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy

The first great drama-compendium of the new century; a breathtakingly directed slice-of-life from the San Fernando valley in California where the lives of nine people intersect during a few short hours. All of them have one thing in common, but we don’t know what it is until some time has passed. One of the nine people is Donnie Smith, an aging gay man (Macy) who was a great success as a 9 year old prodigy in a quiz-show on TV. Sadly, Donnie’s  life is now close to ruin. He’s got a big crush on a handsome young guy down at the local pub. Without youth or good looks, however, there is no chance Donnie will ever win him over...unless...

One of several great stories in this very moving film. Like a brilliant novel you just can’t put down! William H Macy does very well by his part and makes you feel the pain inside him. The tragicomic and bizarre finale of the movie is also something to see! Yngvar

The first info I received on this film were two tag lines ”The first gay male film from India!” and “A not so straight movie” - so of course i was very interested to seeing this film. I have just finished watching it. The film maker must have seen “Boys In The Band” and decided to make an Indian version. Many of the characters from that film are brought back to life but in this film. There are one liners and even the big queen Emery but with another name. Just when I thought that it would just be a remake of the “Boys In The Band” and that was that – the story line take a little turn and becomes a story of boy meets boy – boys love each other – one boy can not accept the gay life – so boy goes with boys sister - as an alternative.

A well done film which starts off as a remake and ends up a very interesting film especially if you like to find out about other cultures – see this film !

Mannen som elsket Yngve

(trans: the Man who loved Yngve) Norway 2008 Director: Stian Kristiansen
This is one of the big success stories of 2008 in Norwegian film. Originally a bestselling bookabout a homosexual crush in the life of 17 year old Jarle, it plays very well on film too.
Jarle, who defines himself as very much hetero, plays guitar in a local punk band, is a red blooded anarchist, and hangs out with his girlfriend during the weekends. He lives with his single mum and secretly hates his dad, who is bullish and alcoholic.
Then Jarle meets the new guy in school, the angelic looking Yngve, and his life is turned around. The question here is: Can you accept a young boy having a homosexual love affair, and still not define himself as gay? The author of the book, Tore Renberg, is pretty vague on the issue of Jarle, and insists the story is about romantic obsession, not homosexuality. You should have a look and decide for yourself. I personally loved it - it's fresh, funny, youthful and full of insight. Yngvar

Männer wie wir
Director: Sherry Horman
Germany: 2004: 106 minutes:

With: Maximilian Brückner as Ecki, Lisa Potthoff as Susanne, Dietmar Bär as Eckis Vater, Saskia Vester as Eckis Mutter, Rolf Zacher as Karl, Mariele Millowitsch as Elke. David Rott as Sven, Christian Berkel as Rudolf, Charly, Hübner as Horst, Markus John as Tom, Andreas Schmidt as Jürgen, Hans Löw as Klaus, Billey. Demirtas as Ercin. Edesson Batista De Jesus as Ronaldo.

Well what to say about this film which I have just watched ! It is a German comedy and seems a bit out of dated. It is about a guy who plays soccer on a Straight team but as is thrown off it as they discover that he is gay. He in turn is upset- makes a deal to form a team to play a game opposite the Straights. So he leaves for the big city to find men who are gay and soccer players. He starts a team with the gays and of course has trouble getting the gays to play the games correctly (hum gays can not play as well as straights ?). What happens seems to be a laugh comedy for straight people, oh well see it yourself and decide... Phillip

Italian Mambo
Canada: 2003: 89 mins:
Director: Steve Galluccio Emile Gaudreault

With: Luke Kirby, Peter Miller, Paul Sorvino and Ginette Reno:

Based on a theater play called Italian Mambo the movie seems like as the  "Greek wedding" with a Italian family and a gay son.

Angelo (Kirby) moves from his parents home to the his lover´s home, Nino (Miller) who is a cop and a childhood friend. When Angelo decides to get out of the closet, Nino dumps him and starts to date a girl because Nino wants to keep in the closet. Claudio

Alternative review

I like this films a lot and enjoyed every minute of it.

It is the story of Angelo who has a secret lover called Nino and is a cop.
Coming out in this type of conservative family is probably very hard to do, so when Angelo tells his parents he is gay, they take it badly, as one could probably have thought. This is not a dysfunctional home, in the traditional sense, but like most families facing this situation, they can't believe they have produced a son that is "homosexual".

This light comedy is a funny approach to what happens when the unexpected occurs. The interplay between the two different cultures in the Italian-Canadian community setting could not be more true about the movie tries to deal with. The most important point the film makes is that Angelo, by coming out, is a much better person than Nino, who will probably go through life living a double life and being miserable in both worlds.

This comedy is good for care free laughs. Director Emile Gaudreault keeps things moving quickly. The cast is very good.  Phillip

M. Butterfly
Director: David Cronenberg
USA: 1993: 101 minutes: Transvestite / Love story
With: Jeremy Irons as Rene Gallimard and John Lone as Song Liling:

This film is the true story of a French diplomat (played by sexy Jeremy Irons). He is on assignment at the embassy in China and meet a Chinese opera star called Song Liling. They start a relationship and if you can believe that the diplomat over the years has never seen the opera star naked then you can also believe that he never knew the girl was a boy ! (played by John Lone) The affair is discovered by the authorities and although the diplomat tries to say he never knew the she was a he no one believes him and he goes to prison - where he also hears and performs drag opera - if it looks like a gay - acts like a gay it probably is a gay. All kidding aside this is a beautiful film based on a Broadway play. Phillip

Note: there last dialog together where both are dressed as men goes like this:

Song Liling: Under the robes, beneath everything, it was always me. Tell me you adore me.
Rene Gallimard: How could you, who understood me so well, make such a  mistake? You've shown me your true self, and what I love was the lie, perfect lie, that's been destroyed.
Song Liling: You never really loved me.
Rene Gallimard: I'm a man who loved a woman created by a man. Anything else simply falls short.

Madame Satã
Director:  Karïm Aïnouz
Brazil: 2001: 105 minutes:
With: Lázaro Ramos, Marcélia Cartaxo, Flávio Bauraqui:

Film inspired by the life of João Francisco dos Santos (1900-1976). A sometime rogue, artist, transvestite,   player, chef, convict, adopted father, he spent most of his life in the streets of bohemian Rio de Janeiro. The story takes place in the Lapa neighborhood, in 1932, when João Francisco’s dream – to be a stage star – becomes a reality. The film portrays his daily life, and that of his circle of friends, focusing on a crucial moment in his trajectory; the moment that precedes the creation of the myth of Madame Satã, a name taken from a Cecil B. De Mille 1930 movie, with which João has fallen in love. This film was selected for the UN CERTAIN REGARD program at the Cannes Festival in 2002.

Madame Sousatzka
USA: 1988: Gay Character
With: Shirley MacLaine and Lee Monaque:

This film is listed for two reasons, the first is that there is a very well written secondary character in this film. It is a very short role about an older man who turns to Mme Sousatzka for help after he is gay bashed and she helps him. The second reason is that Shirley MacLaine is very good in this film as Mme Sousatzka who is a piano teacher. So see the film for both of these reasons.  Phillip

Madagascar Skin
Director: Christpher Newby
UK: 1994: 93 minutes: Gay
With: Bernard Hill as the older man and John Hannah as Harry:

The film centers on a man called Harry and opens up with him at a gay bar filled with handsome men. There is only one problem he has a large facial birthmark which is in the form of a map of Madagascar (hum... you have to have been good at school to know that ) anyway he is rejected by everyone and even tried to Dark room (which appears to have too much light ) and he get rejected there, in a hot scene but as the song goes "Love will always find you - no matter where you hide" well one day he is at the beach and saves an older man from drowning. This man has tattoos so he doesn't seem to mind the birth mark. What develops between the two seems to be real love, even thought the older man has a few quirks ! This is a must see film !  Phillip

Bart tries to keep cool, aloof and tries to stay out of love as he has done most of his life. The wife finds out about the relationship and to see how this triangle comes out and if there is a Hollywood "happy end" you will have to first see this film. Note: This subject was very bold when it came out but now seems to have lost it's boldness but the story is still a very beautiful filmed love story and is certainly one of the films which set the foundation for toady's better films and when I re-watched this film I now know why my mother told me to get a Doctor for a lover ;-) he is soooo cute !!  Man I love, the

France: 1997
Director: Stephane Giusti
With: Jean-Michel Portal and Marcial Di Fonzo Bo

I love the French! This made-for-TV movie is such a charmer. Lucas and Martin are janitors at the local Aqua-world and boy are they in love!? Yes, they are. Sadly, Martin is saddled with a girlfriend and has a lot of explaining to do. Lucas, meanwhile, has a secret – a very big one.
If you don’t enjoy this love story, you probably hate movies in general. The balance between comedy and pathos is just right. Wait till you see Lucas’mother. Isn’t she just gorgeous? I gave this my vote in the “Audience choice” ballot at the Oslo g/l-film festival 2003. I said it – now go see it!

Man is a woman

France: 1998
Director: Jean-Jacques Zilbermann
With: Antoine de Caunes and Elsa Zylberstein

Simon is a gay, Jewish musician who can’t get a boyfriend. His mother urges him to find a girl and his homophobic uncle promises him a legacy of 10 million francs if he marries and has children. Simon has a crush on his straight cousin as well.So what’s a man to do? Well – not what Simon is doing, I hope. Simon (played by cutie de Caunes from Eurotrash) makes all the wrong choices and I got well and truly pissed at him during the course of this movie. I dare you to like this guy. Gay audiences will probably be turned off by the Jewish storyline and vice-versa. The movie is very well directed and beautifully acted, but the story sucks big time. I felt insulted as a gay man. Re-run the Wedding banquet or la Cage aux Follies 2 and forget this one.

He first appears to have a crush on a young man called Bobby (he calls him Bosey - which was Oscar Wilde´s lovers name) but later in the movie he is after an older woman called Adele, so I guess that makes him either a bisexual or a person who can't decide what he wants. What to say about this film - It is a Belgium production and contains something for everyone. It is a thriller with S/M, Transvestites, Transsexuals, Brother and Sister lust and most of that takes place in the club "Mister Butterfly" which is a quite wild gay club. It is really too hard to try and tell you all but this film is definitely worth a look ! Good performances and there is even a surpass á la The Crying Game ! Phillip

M*A*S*H
Director: Robert Altman
USA: 1970: 116 minutes: Heterosexual film with gay references
With: Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould and Sally Kellerman:

Hum this is basically a straight military film about the Korean War and a medical unit. It contains many nasty gay jokes but the reason I have mentioned it is that there is a scene where a Dentist thinks that he is becoming a "fairy" (nasty word for a gay) so the soldiers arrange a Straight night for him and low and behold He is cured the next morning (who ever heard of such a stupid thing ?) See the film if you a watcher of all gay or gay content movies otherwise get a newer really gay film - you'll enjoy it better. Phillip

MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE
Director: Nagisa Oshima
UK / Japan: 1983: 122 mins:
With: Tom Conti, David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takeshi, Jack Thompson

I normally do not watch films about war but I had to watch this film as there is a homosexual relationship between the Japanese soldier  and his English captive (played by David Bowie). The two seem to have a very strange relationship and the Japanese soldier is more than taken by Bowie´s character. There are many hints at these feeling but the big scene comes when Bowie´s character stops the leader from killing an English soldier by hugging and kissing him in front of all his soldiers exposing the feelings he feels. You really should see the film as it is more about feelings than about sex or sexuality. Bowie is very good and the rest of the cast too ! Phillip
