Labyrinth of Passion
[Original title: Laberinto de pasiones]
Director / Producer: Pedro Almodovar
Spain: 1982: 97 - 100 Minutes. : Camp comedy/drama
With: Antonio Banderas as Sadec, Cecilia Roth :Sexi, Imanol Arias as Riza, Fernandez-Muro as Queti, Fernando Vivanco as the Doctor, Agustin Almodovar as Hassan, and a cameo by Pedro Almodovar:

This film is both camp and a drama and made by Almodovar so it is a little tricky to explain but I will try. Riza is the son of a Middle East tyrant who is no longer in power. He falls for the first time in love with a girl and not with a man, her name is Sexi and she is a member of a rock band. There is also Sadec (played by Antonio Banderas) who falls for Riza and wants the man as his lover. Meanwhile there are terrorists who want to kidnap both Riza and the gay guy. You see I told you it is hard to explain this film so just see it and you will (maybe) understand the film. Phillip
Note: look out for the cameo of Almodovar dressed in drag as a member of the rock band.

(Original title: DETIK TERAKHIR )
Director: Nanang Istiabudi
Indonesia, 2005 : 90 mins: : Language: Indonesian
With: Cornelia Agatha, Sausan, Ari Sudarsono, Mike Muliadro, Dewi Irawan.

This film is set in Jakarta Indonesia and is basically about a girl who is brought up in a house full of hate and abuse. She is seeking the love she does not get at home and finds it in a lesbian drug  user. They fall in love and she becomes a drug user too. I have read that this film was a shocker to the population of Indonesia as it showed not only a strong lesbian relationship but the open use of drugs in that society. The lesbian relationship is well acted and even thought they are doomed you still want to know about them. Would be nice to see a gay relationship film from Indonesia with such a strong relationship story line !

Latter days
USA 2003: Gay drama
Directed by C. Jay Cox
With: Wes Ramsey, Steve Sandvoss, Jaqueline Bisset:

A very watchable love story between Christian, a gay L.A. playboy and Aaron, a Mormon Elder out to preach Gospel to the heathens. The playboy takes a bet that he can get the Mormon boy into bed with him. But things don't turn out as Christian expected..

I won't give you more of the plot but I was pleasantly surprised at the good acting and several story-twists. The boys are seriously hot and there are evil, bitchy one-liners a-plenty. There is a great love scene in it, too. The Mormons /Latter day saints did not appreciate the way they were portrayed, (read the message-boards at IMDB.com) Yngvar

Note: has won the following Awards:

AUDIENCE AWARD: Outstanding First Narrative Feature, Los Angeles Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.

AUDIENCE AWARD: Best Feature, Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Alternative review:

“just for fun” the tag line of the film is : Aaron prays. Christian plays... Opposites attract.

With: Antonio Banderas as Antonio Benitez, Eusebio Poncela as Pablo Quintero, Carmen Maura as Tina Quintero, Miguel Molina as Juan Bermudez, Fernando Guillen as Inspector and a cameo by Pedro Almodovar as Pepe Patatia:

This is a film about Pablo who lives and is works as a filmmaker in Madrid. He is in love with Juan but Juan is not sure that he feels the same way so he leave Madrid and tell Pablo that he can continue their relationship through letter writing. Pablo becomes lonely and one night picks up Antonio (played by future star Antonio Banderas) who in turn falls head over heels in love with Pablo and will do anything to keep him as a lover. Pablo does not love him and so now the comedy changes to a drama for Antonio finds out about Juan and in a fit a jealousy goes to his town and kills him (talk about doing anything for love ! ) Pablo´s sister Tina arrives in the film and it turns out she was his brother before the sex change (just to keep the film moving). When Antonio sees that he is not going to get Pablo and that Pablo is now against him, he decides to frame Pablo for the murder. There is one last scene with Pablo held hostage and is FORCED to go to bed with Antonio before the police get him. Hum I know a lot of people who would do this without the force ! Anyway this is a good film and very open about being gay, plus it is interesting to see Spanish gay life through the eyes of this film. Phillip

Leather Boys, The
Director: Sidney J. Furie
UK: 1963: 108 Minutes. : B/W: Drama gay love motorcycle
With : Colin Campbell as Reggie, Dudley Sutton as Pete Rita Tushingham as Dot and Johnny Briggs as the Boy Friend:

I really like this film from the 60´s which hold up even when looking at it today. I know it was about rebel teenagers but that is not the way I view this film. For me it is the story of a Reggie who is young man who basically wants to spend his time with male friends but gets caught by Dot who manages to get this handsome youth to marry her. They are married at too young an age and playing married only lasts for so long and they start to separate and spend more time away from each other. Low and behold comes a young man called Peter who wants Reggie all to himself. They ride motorcycles together, get drunk together eventually share both an apartment and bed together, which is what Pete wants. Pete is nasty to Dot when she tried to get Reggie back and she says they look like a couple of queers (she hit the nail half way on the head). Reggie does not realize that Pete is gay until the last scene when they have decided to go to America together on a ship. Pete sends Reggie into a gay bar to wait for him and at that point the light comes on in Reggies head that Pete is a regular in this bar so he must be gay. Reggie is shocked and leaves the bar and Pete (in a fantastic last scene of the movie). Pete tried getting Reggie for a lover without telling him what he wanted so it could only end in a shock for Reggie. This film is a very good one so see it when you get the chance. Phillip

Note: I tried to get this film for years but couldn't find it - then one evening on a trip to Kansas City, I saw it in the window but the shop was closed and the next morning I had to fly out early for my next USA city stop but do you think I let that stop me? No I took a taxi to the shop, had the driver wait till the shop opened ran in and bought it, ran back to the taxi and then to the airport only to discover that I had just missed my flight so I booked on the next flight but it was worth it as I finally had my copy of this film! As you can figure I am a dedicated collector and will go to all lengths to get something for my collection, especially a good film like this from the 60s !

He there meets some drag queens who take him to their bar and where they perform. He meets and becomes sex partners with an S/M guy (who already has a lover) and starts to like leather coats. He blooms and gets on with his life and if it is with the S/M guy you will just have to watch this really good film ! Phillip

USA: 2003: 85 Minutes:
With: Matthew Twining as Stevo, Josh Henderson as Jason, Stacey Nelson as Casey, Michael Lutz as Spencer, Tony Carroccio as Coach Foster, Stephen Swan as Tony, Greg Lyczkowski as Fish and others:

This film is not listed because it has gay characters but is listing as it has a feeling that this horror film was was made for a gay audience. It is a laughable science fiction film with slimy leeches. They get bigger and nastier when they start eating the blood of handsome swimming guys who walking around the whole picture in tight little bathing suits (just how many of them do you need in one picture ?). These guys are slim swimming hunks and not very smart but who cares since they are great tooooo look at !!!!! There is even a scene with a leech climbing up the body of one of the hunks and it stops to look at his pretty ass as if it were going to enter. Have a peek and a laugh and see which handsome guy they will eat next! Oh don´t expect great acting in this film.

Director: William Hale
USA: 1988: Made for TV: aids biographical gay music
Director: William Hale:
With: Andy Robinson as Liberace, John Rubinstein as Jamie, Maris Valainis as Scott, Rue McClanahan as Frances Liberace, Robert Petkoff as the young Liberace, Debi A. Monahan as Bea Haven, Leslie Bevis as Maxine Lewis, Romy Windsor as Jane, Gerald Hiken as John Benjamin Cleveland as Young George, Alba Francesca as Courtney, Thom Adcox as Darin and Tracy K. Shaffer as Lydia:

There were two TV films rushed out to tell the story of Liberace and I personally think both of them are OK. They tell the story of Liberace who was a great entertainer and lived his life quite gay without ever saying he was gay. He has his own TV show and was the first real gay person people was on TV. They all knew it but it was never really spoken about. Liberace always said about the nasty stories that "He laughed all the way to the bank" and he did. One of the big loves of his life was Scott who was a very young boy who lived and toured with him. His last laugh was that he said he was sick and losing weight due to a "watermelon diet". He died without out ever saying he was gay and in the end a lawsuit exhumed his body and it was found out that he died of AIDS ! So not only was he a closet gay, he was also a closet aids person. In the end it came out and I still wonder if he could have helped the cause if he had come out and said he has Aids before he died as Rock Hudson finally did. Oh well each person has to make his own decisions right ! Phillip

Life and death
(original title: Liv & død)
Directors: Svend Wam & Petter Vennerød
Norway: 1980: Gay and bisexual characters
With: Bjørn Skagestad, Kjersti Døvigen and Sossen Krogh:

A bisexual doctor enters into a threesome with his wife and one of his male nurses. In the beginning, all goes well but there are clouds on the horizon...This is another of those anarchistic movies made by the infamous Wam & Vennerød, where everything is questioned, like moral values, sexual sterotypes and human freedom. There is a nice scene from a disco, packed with transvestites (music by Abba). The doctor also meets up with a gay biker wearing a really cool leather outfit. Oh..and the leading actors are quite handsome. A very gay film. Yngvar

Life aquatic with Steve Zissou, The
Dirctor: Wes Anderson
USA 2005
With: Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Owen Wilson, Kate Blanchett

Weirdly plotted comedy about Steve Zissou, a deep-sea explorer (modelled after Jacques Cousteau) hunting the giant, mythical shark that killed his partner. He is also trying to finance and shoot a movie about his work. Lots of other things happen. Shades of Moby Dick..
The reason I included this on MTG is the character Alistair Hennessey (played by Jeff Goldblum), a queer arch-rival of Zissou, who once was married to Zissou’s wife....
Hennessey “The marriage had its problems..As you know, I happen to be bisexual...
Zissou “Aren’t we all?”
Or something like that. It’s nice dialogue, and it’s a nice movie.Yngvar

Lisa Picard is Famous
Director: Griffin Dunne
USA: 2000: 93 Minutes:
With: Laura Kirk, Nat DeWolf, Griffin Dunne, Sandra Bullock, Spike Lee, Charlie Sheen, Buck Henry, Carrie Fisher:

This film is abut Lisa Picard (Kirk) who want to be famous and her gay friend Tate Kelly (quite a cutie) who also wants fame. Lisa will do almost anything to get famous and the film follows her try for success. The good thing about the film is the gay roll as Tate who is doing his own off-off-off Broadway play which is about homophobia and is played by the actor in all the time his his underwear. The play seems doomed and has very few viewers until the New York Times critic write it is a fantastic play and with that review the play is a success and Tate becomes famous before his friend Lisa does -who knows if she will get fame so you will have to watch this movies to find out. I liked it. Phillip

Little miss Sunshine
Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
USA 2006
With: Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette

The Hoover family has very little to recommend it. Father is a struggling salesman into “self-improvement”-programs, the son doesn’t speak to anyone, grandfather is a lecherous old drug addict, and the gay uncle has just tried to commit suicide. Then - the little daughter, Olive (charming Abigail Breslin) wins a place in the “Little miss Sunshine” finals in California. (a horrible, horribly American beauty pageant for little girls..)
Father decides they should ALL go to California in their beat-up VW bus and cheer Olive on to victory.
A very good road-movie/ comedy with heartwarming people in it; Steve Carell an absolute wonder in his part as the gay Proust-expert, who sees his life slipping into mud before him. A lot of strange things happen, but the movie never strays into parody or slapstick. In the end, we find that the Hoovers have lots of love for eachother. That means my first sentence is untrue. They can be strongly recommended!  Yngvar

Little Nicky

USA: 2000: 90 mins:
Director: Steven Brill
With: Adam Sandler, Harvey Keitel, Reese Witherspoon:

Comedy alternating between hell, earth and heaven. Sandler plays Nicky, a good, little devil who loves Satan (well, you see - it’s his father!) When Satan’s other sons go to earth for some serious kick-ass demonizing, Satan starts to disintegrate and Little Nicky has to follow his brothers to persuade them to return to hell. When Nicky stays in New York, he shares a flat with a gay would-be actor. The actor is proto gay, yet doesn’t want to come out of the closet. Everyone keeps telling him: “Aw come on , you’re gay and you know it!

A CLOSETED GAY STAGE ACTOR IN NEW YORK!! That’s the best joke in the whole movie.. The rest is just OK, and sometimes veeeerrrry dirty. Some famous people play cameos (Ozzy Osbourne, Quentin Tarantino, Henry Winkler etc.) Yngvar

USA: 1992: Aids Roads Movie with two gay lovers
Director/ Writer: Gregg Araki

This is a strange Black comedy made on a shoe string budget but none the less worth mentioning and seeing. It is the story of Jon who lives in the city and makes films. He meet and enters into a relationship with Luke (who is a drifter) they go off on a road movie type of adventure with one exception that they are both gay and both have Aids. Jon moans all the way as he has given up his city life and standard of living to go with Luke on this adventure. Later on in this adventure Luke comes up with an answer to his problem to shoot himself during sex on the beach but can't do it in the end. The film ends with them sitting on the beach together facing the world which they blame for their aids. Somehow you are giving the thought that they will find a place to be together. Phillip

Locked up
(original title: Gefangen)
Germany 2004
Directed by Jørg Andreas

Prison-sex drama about young Dennis, serving time for credit card fraud, and his passionate
love affair with fellow prisoner Mike. Not a spectacular film by any means, low budget with mediocre music and photo, but the story is entertaining and very sexy. Shot in hi-def video and amateurishly acted, but strangely compelling and sweet, too. (Take warning, there are some violent and semi-pornographic scenes, so don't say I didn't tell you!). The extras on the DVD include some good interviews with the leading men and hot deleted scenes.

Note: This review is about the American DVD, soft-core release of the film, but there is also a hardcore version, that is definitely porn. If you want to know more about that, try other sites than Movies Too Gay. Yngvar

UK: 1979: 114 Minutes. : Gay gangster / murder

It shows the lives of the friends who live in New York City but play and vacation at Fire Island and how this illness effect them and the people they meet. It shows us exactly how the disease changed gay lives and behavior from the beginning days till 1989. You can't help but get involved with their lives, loves and losses. This is a really GOOD film and a must if you have not see it. OH the title of the film refers to the term that the New York Times used in obituaries which was "Longtime Companion" of the dead person. The word gay lover or homosexual lover was never used by them. Phillip

Note: I saw this film at the cinema when it came out and the entire film really got me and I started to cry at the end. I was embarrassed until a leather guy sitting next to me patted me on the back and when I looked at him noticed that he had been crying too! So if you haven't seen this film buy a box of tissues and watch it !

Love and Death on Long Island
With John Hurt as Giles De'Ath and Jason Priestley:

Hum, I saw this film at a gay film festival and I had mixed feeling about this comedy. An older man falls in love with an image on the screen (a young American actor) and decides to follow those feelings into reality It stars John Hurt as proper Englishman who develops this crush an an American actor. After renting all the films the actor has made he decides to go to the USA to get his man. Once you get over the fact that he has the balls to do it – it is an interesting film and very well acted. Jason is also good as the love interest who turns out to be straight but this does not stop him and he worms himself into the life of the actor and his girlfriend. When this does not get the results that he wants he tries to offer director in the actors career – I guess to stay near him and hope and wait. He finally deals his last card and you will have to see the film to see if he gets his man ! Phillip

Love life
USA 2007
Directed by Damion Dietz
With: Stephen D. Gill, Stephanie Kirchen, Keith Bearden

Mini-budgeted, sexy drama about a marriage of convenience between Mary, a lesbian and Joe, a gay former football player. They both have affairs on the side, but keep up appearances. Finally, serious romantic encounters force them to take a long, hard look at their lives.
The main reason for watching "Love life" is the leading actors, who are all very good-looking, Stephen D. Gill looks like one of those muscular Titan men. I can easily see him in Rambo or Die Hard-movies. He appears nude in several scenes, which is a good thing. The movie as a whole is a bit slow, but watchable. There is a good moral here too. See it!

Love Is the Devil
Director /Writer : John Maybury
UK / France / Japan: 1998: 90 Minutes: Gay Main characters
With: Derek Jacobi as Francis Bacon, Daniel Craig as George Dyer and Tilda Swinton as Muriel Belcher:

This is John Maybury first film and hopefully it will be the start of many more. It is the story of Francis Bacon's life including his long time relationship with Dyer and his artistic side. It takes place in the 1960´s and 1970´s. Rest assured that the relationship of Bacon and Dyer had it´s big ups and downs and this film tries to show the full story. A must see for lovers of gay history. The only thing I disliked in this film was Francis Bacon,  who was one of the biggest bitches that ever existed. He mistreated his love and all around him but if this was his true character it has to be shown ! Phillip

Note: I love these new gay films which are coming out with gay / lesbian stories of people who really existed and are a part of our history !

This is a really good Canadian film about David who is a former TV star and a little bitchy about life as he now waits on tables. He lives with Candy who is David´s ex lover before he came out. This is a film about the two of them and the people who become involved with them. David is interested in his co-worker who is a 17 year old boy who is not sure if he returns David's lust for him ! but is willing to try it out ! David also has a best friend who is a hunk and counts David as his "BEST" friend. To add to this story Candy is having trouble with men but she doesn't know what she's in for when a young Lesbian gets in her bed at a weak point in her life. To top this all off there is a serial killer killing women in their neighborhood. To see who gets who watch the film as it is a very interesting film. Phillip

Love Like No Other, A
[Original title: Liebe wie andere auch, Eine]
[AKA: Wie geht ein Mann?]
Directors: Martin Ripkens Hans Stempel
Germany (West): 1983: Drama gay love
With: Klaus Adler as Wieland, Stuart Wolfe as Wolf, Christa Maerker as Christa Heinz, Paul Lotter as Paul, Thomas Bloecker, Michael Foester, Johannes Kuester, Bernd Langschied, Friedhelm Lehmann Klaus D. Lucas; Heinz Rathsack, Herta Von Klewitz:

This is an excellent German film about two long time lovers who live in West Berlin. One is a teacher and the other is a bookseller. On the surface they have it all - looks - good jobs . a good lifestyle but their almost perfect relationship is coming apart and are starting to think about their relationship and what it has become but most of all what to do about it. This is a film which I can highly recommend. Phillip

Note : This is a rare type of gay film where heterosexuals could also play the roles in the film with little or no rewrites thus showing that gay relationships and heterosexual ones share the same problems.

Love Of Siam
(Original title Rak haeng Siam)
Director: Matthew Chukiat Sakveerakul
Thailand: 2007: 150 mins: Drama, Coming of Age
With Witwisit Hirunwongkul, Mario Maurer, Chermarn Boonyasak, Sinjai Plengpanich, Songsit Rungnopakunsri, Kanya Rattanapetch, Aticha Pongsilpipat:

Love of Siam” is a contemporary Thai film that explores nascent sexuality, both homo- and hetero- in such an equal and natural way that it puts Western efforts to shame.

The story begins with the introduction of two young boys from two very different backgrounds. Tong comes from a relatively happy Catholic family and Mew is a sensitive, musically gifted boy who lives with his grandmother. The two boys strike up an innocent, loving friendship that is disrupted when Tong’s family endures a traumatic loss and Tong is forced to move away with his parents. Years later, old friends Tong and Mew, who are now teenagers, meet by chance at Siam.

Tong is now a handsome boy who is not especially interested in his pretty girlfriend Donut. Mew is delighted at the possibility of reuniting with his old friend. As Mew tries to compose a ‘real’ love song, it becomes apparent to him that he must face his attraction to Tong and accept his homosexual feelings. For a brief moment, Tong reciprocates Mew’s love and they share a particularly tender kiss after a party. As elated as Mew is by the possibility of having his first boyfriend, Tong, under much family pressure, begins to withdraw from Mew.

The message of “Love of Siam” is the importance of being honest and true to oneself. Only when we have strength to show who we really are, can we begin to share the best of ourselves with others. Kimmy

Love to Hide, A
(Original title): Un amour à taire
Director: Christian Faure
France: 2005: 103 mins: French with English subtitles)
With: Bruno Todeschini, Charlotte De Turckheim, Jeremie Renier, Louise Monot, Michel Jonasz:

This is a very emotional upsetting film. It has beauty and cruelty at the same time. It takes place in 1942 Paris where the Nazi’s are in control. Two handsome young gay lovers called Philippe and Jean are not able to show their love in public but in private they are happy and in love.

One works at the family business and the other is in secret a French Resistance helper. They are confronted with helping a Jewish girl who had been Jeans lover in his youth and their lives become very complicated.

There is a 1940s gay bar scene, which I found very interesting.

All through the opening I had the feeling something terrible would happen and I was waiting for it to happen and of course it does:

Jean is accused by the Nazis of being a member of the “third sex” and also having a gay relationship with a Nazi officer.

From this point on the beautiful love affair between then is onset by sadness. I had the feeling that I personally wanted to help them but then it was a film and I could not. Gay life must have been terrible back then and the only thing gays could do is to wait out the rule of the Nazis - boy am I happy I live in this day and age.

This film is a must see! Phillip

Love ! Valour ! Compassion !
USA

This film is based on playwright Terrence McNally's Love! Valor! Compassion! It is the story about a group of gay friends and lovers who spend holidays together in the country. It is sort of a "Boys In The Band" goes to the country side for weekends.
I laughed - I cried and I wondered why I did not have such a super house and super blind lover !
Phillip

Note this film is a real break-through and besides being cleverly written the characters get into your skin !

Director: Delbert Mann.

With Rock Hudson as Jerry and Doris Day as Carol:

Is a good comedy but only listed as in one scene Rock is swimming and
Carol takes his clothes so that Rock is forced to take a woman's mink coat over his bathing suit. A person who sees this says Rock is the last guy in the world that they would have figured !(meaning a play on his being gay – which was not know to the public at that time). Phillip

Lucky blue
Sweden 2007: Short film
Directed by Håkon Liu

Olle and Kevin meet at a trailer camp and start a clumsy, but sweet affair during the hot summer months.

Håkon Liu is a Norwegian director who's just starting out on his movie career. This is his first commercial short, following after "Nights in love", another gay themed short made as part of his exams at the School of Film Directing at Göteborg University. Liu wrote this explanation for the plot of "Lucky blue"on an Internet site:
"I got the idea for the film while reading a review of my car, a Mitsubishi Carisma, in a car magazine. Technically, it stood up well, but apparently the car lacked charisma. I felt sorry for my dull car. Suddenly an image appeared before me of an uncharismatic bird flapping about in a trailer. My thoughts wandered further, to the summer when I toured camping sites as a drag queen. Karaoke, beer and strands of lights. My doomed teenage crush one summer night in 1989 somewhere in Germany. That´s basically how the film came to be."
- Håkon Liu, director
"Lucky blue" can be enjoyed on YouTube under that title.

L-WORD,The : Season 1, 2, 3
Director: Mary Harron, Rose Troche, Lynne Stopkewich, Clement Virgo, Daniel Minahan, Tony Goldwyn, Kari Skogland:
USA, 2004, 2005, 2006: From Showtime
With: Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Karina Lombard, Laurel Holloman, Eric Mabius, Katherine Moennig, Mia Kirschner, Pam Grier, Tammy Lynn Michaels, Guinevere Turner, Anne Archer, Julian Sands, Ossie Davis, Lolita Davidovitch, Snoop Dogg, Rosanna Arquette, Helen Shaver, Kelly Lynch

Queer As Folk was for the homosexual (and some lesbians ) the break through series ! Showing homosexual relationships as they really are and then came along The L-WORD and did the same for the Lesbian community! The main differences with the two TV Series is that Queer As Folk has very young characters and includes lesbian story lines while The L-Word has more mature characters and maily has a lesbian story lien without gay men. So i guess it would be safe to say the if your a lesbian you can watch both series and feel proud and if you are a gay man then Queer is the one for you. Emjoy ! Phillip
