He only has this short time to be with her as he is being shipped off to the Vietnam war. Now for the gay content (besides looking at Claude and wanting him to climb into your bed or thinking that Treat Williams might be a treat for the night) you will hear Woof say that he is not gay but wouldn't kick Mick Jagger out of his bed !Phillip

Hairspray
Director: John Waters
USA: 1988: 91 Mins.
With: Divine as Edna Turnblad/Arvin Hodgepile, Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad, Sonny Bono as Franklin von Tussle, Ruth Brown as Motormouth Mabel, Debbie Harry as Velma Von Tussle, Jerry Stiller as Wilbur Turnblad, Pia Zadora as Beatnik Chick and a guest appearance by John Waters as The Psychiatrist::

This is the story of fat over thin and is about a fat girl who doesn't let her weight stop her from dancing her way to a local TV dance show. She finds fame and a good-looking boy at the same time. It is Baltimore and it is the 1950´s with both real dance numbers and newly created ones to fit in the film. It is a John Waters film and of course, stars Divine as both a mom and a cameo role as a man (yes he/she was one). It is fun to watch and cast is excellent. Oh by the way your not supposed to know that Divine is a drag queen and he/she does such a good job that I have straight friends who thought it was just a big big woman !
Note: Ricki Lake went on to be in a few other films but is now known for her daily talk show She has lost tons of weight and is quite slim now, so no more John Waters films for her.Phillip

Note there is a new Hairspray out with John travolta playing the character Divine played.. Review coming !

Hannah & Her Brothers

Slovakian:2000: 77 mins: in Slovak with English subtitles on the DVD:

( Original title: Hana a Jej Bratia )

The subject matter of this film we have seen before but since it is made in Slovakia it has a new style to it. Martin is 18 and knows what he is looking for. He wants someone in his life to share the different feelings he has. He has a neighbor called Theodora who helps him do a personal ad and then goes over the responses with him. The one that stands out is Hannah who is a man at a cabaret called Hannah and Her Brothers. Hannah seems to be the same as Martin – could he be the person Martin is looking for ? See the film to find out !!! Phillip

Note the story line is very interesting and handled very well and to top that has fun musical numbers.

He gets a visit from two college female friends - Judith is an ex-girlfriend, who wants to resume the affair but in reality he wants her blond brother Randy (makes you want to dye your hair blond and take the next jet to Philadelphia and try your luck with the ITALIAN MEN). As the picture moves along Francis starts to realize and accept the fact that he is homosexual ! Rita Moreno (From The Ritz) and Madeline Kahn are also in this movie and scream and yell through most of it. See the film ! Phillip

Director: John Hacker
USA: 1999: 102 mins:

Oh my this is a serial murder drama. It is a low budget film but comes off as if it was to be made in this style. Put in a closet cop who cruses men in the evening and then add a serial killer who likes to murder hustlers and gay teens and you will have a real thriller which contains sex and violence but most of all a great story line which can hold up to large budget films ! See it and judge for yourself. Phillip

Hard Pill
Director:/ Writer: John Baumgartner
USA: 2005: 94 mins:
With Jonathan Slavin as Tim, Scotch Ellis Loring as Joey, Susan Slome as Sally, Mike Begovich as Don, Jennifer Elise Cox as Tanya, Jason Bushman as Matt and others.

I remember a USA Made For TV film where quite a long time ago where a family has to decide to use a new test to see if their unborn baby will turn out gay. The brother / brother in-law of the family was gay. It all revolved around should you abort the child if it is gay and of course this caauses a lot of family discussions and a lot of soul searching.

Now years later comes Hard Pill and the gay or straight discussion takes a new turn this time it is not about a unborn baby but a gay man called Tim who has little luck in the gay scene with an occasional blow job on a best straight friend. He is a very unhappy person.

.He hears about a new pill that can turn you straight and decides to be a test person with the pill. In order to turn straight he has to give up all his friends (straight or gay) and change his entire life. He must also change his work as he is known as a gay man there plus the film shows you how his friends are effect by this change which makes you think about your real friends.

At this point I felt the movie played into the hands of the people who believe that being gay is a choice rather than an inborn status. Thus a pill change change your mind and body and you become a heterosexual.

For Tim it means adjusting to being straight, finding a girlfriend and ignoring all hi previous life. This was a very scary part of the film and I am glad there is no such pill or treatment (no matter what we are told).

The ending of the film is very satisfying and realistic so at the end of the film you will have a lot to think about and discuss with people you know.

Oh almost forgot the film is shot at points as a documentary which brings the clinic parts of the film to look like reality.

The writer and director John Baumgartner has done a wonderful job to make us mad and then to make us think... a must see film! Phillip

A remake of the classic chiller from 1963, and a lot less interesting. One of the two women is a lesbian in this version. A rather aggressive one too. The other girl refuses to share bedrooms with her (for a while anyway) Otherwise, it´s a standard haunted house mystery with over the tops effects.

"Head On" is a strong film which tells us about Ari´s life.
Ari is a handsome Greek Australian youth who finds himself in a conflict, he wants to come out the closet, but due to his closed community with rigid values he wants that he finds a job and gets a wife.
He does n´t have "balls" to face his reality, so he would rather spend his days having casual sex then fighting with his suburban family. Alex Dimitriades (Ari) is really cute and hot, and he shows all his talent in this film! - OH there is a frontal male nudity scene!

Herr Schmidt and Herr Friedrich
Directed by Ulrike Franke and Michael Loeken.
Germany:

Picture two men, one who lives in East Germany and the other in West Germany. It is 1977 and the Berlin wall separate the two men but in spite of it and all the hardships which separate them they fall in love. Their relationship is watched closely by the East German secret police but in spite of that they know they are made for each other and from the minute they meet they consider themselves married. The east German writes to all the officials that he wants to join his "man" in the west and continues until he finally get permission to go to his man in the West.

Kurt and Wilfried set up household in a small German town and proceed to collect records which becomes a big part of their lives. They can play each record and recall their memories together as well as clothes, photos and other items which they collected over the years.

At first they seem a stink normal couple but as you peel off the layers of their relationship your start to realize what a great love they found and how much they were suited for each other.

They are boring – they are fun to watch – they are set in their way but most of all they had real love ! I liked this story a lot..Phillip

Note: David Hallyday is the son of two famous French singing parents (his mom is Sylvia Vartin and his father is Johnny Hallyday) but he was raised in the USA so there is no sexy French accent but we can forgive that as he is quite the little blond hunk who one would like to see MORE of.

Higher Learning
Director: John Singleton
USA: 1995: 128 Mins.: Drama gay / lesbian characters
With: Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor, Jennifer Connelly as Taryn, Tony Donno as Gay Victim and Cole McLarty as Gay Victim:

Well this one is difficult to review and tell about. It is the story of students at the Columbus University. The Lesbian story is as follows : Kristen (who is pretty and blond) is raped on a date in a self-help group she meets Tayn, who is a also good - looking. They start to get close and Tayn wants to wait with the relationship as she wants Kristen to be sure of what she wants. Kristen's friends think that Tayn is strange but anyway they finally go to bed in a very romantic scene and start a relationship which is interrupted by Kristen meeting the man of her dreams and leaving Tayn. It is made clear that Kristen's friends are happy the lesbian relationship is over. Now for the gay male story. A skinhead is doing recruiting and a gay misunderstands what he wants and thinks that this is a come on for going to sex. When the skinhead realizes what is happening he states "I ain´t no fagot". There is also a horrible gay bashing of two male gay students by the skinheads. If you are going to see this film be warned it is not a gay film and the story line is certainly not one that will make us
happy ! Phillip

Hired to kill
Directed by Nico Mastorakis
USA: 1990
With: Brian Thompson, Jose Ferrer, Oliver Reed, George Kennedy

Mega-jawed, muscle-bound mercenary Thompson is on a mission to free a Latin-American rebel leader from prison. To do this, he has to pretend to be a gay fashion designer. Eh..reality check, please!? This includes kissing Oliver Reed, a scene which must have turned off a lot of beer-swilling action fans. Helping Brian on his noble mission are 6 beautiful commando babes, straight from Charlie’s angels territory.Like Leonard Maltin put, it this is awfully silly. Watching Brian Thompson acting up as gay is funny for about 20 seconds. On the other hand this is so strange, you should probably see it for novelty value alone! Yngvar

Alex is a heterosexual Italian Catholic who wants to be a screenwriter but he soon discovers that he needs a writing partner to get somewhere so along comes Eliot who is a NYC Jewish gay man. This mix of two characters is a lot of fun and emotion. There is even a scene where Alex get Elliot a date with a gay waiter (played by Dawson Creeks- Kerr Smith). Don't get this film mixed up with Kiss Me Guido as they were actors and these two men are writers ;-) Phillip

Hole, The
USA 2004
Director: Wash West

A gay parody of the "Ring"- movies: A videocassette containing disturbing images turns straight men gay 7 days after being exposed to it. They receive a phone call with a voice saying: YOU'RE GAY! They immediately throw themselves on the first man they meet!
Strangely, the "victims" are all cute young guys, who act very gay even before they watch the video! The so-called "news-reporter" looks like he's right out of high-school..

Made by the same director who did "The Fluffer", it's a mildly funny softcore sex-comedy with about 15 minutes of plot and lots and lots of tanned gym-bodies in between. Some nice jokes here and there. You're not supposed to take "the Hole" seriously, of course, but I think the concept behind the film is much better than the actual movie.

Hollow Reed
Director : Angela Pope
UK / Germany: 1995 : 100 mins.
With : Martin Donovan, Joely Richardson and Sam Bould:

This is the story of a married man who realizes that he is gay and must move away from his wife and son. He has a lover who moves in with him and all seems to be going OK till his wife gets a new boyfriend who is mishandling the boy (yes in this film it is the heterosexual who does the mishandling !) The man and his lover want the son to move in with them but the wife refuses and also refuses to believe that the son is being mishandled – she sides with her boyfriend and the whole thing ends up at court. Due to the mishandling story line this film is a very complicated story but the gay relationship is a very interesting one.Phillip

Homo Heights
Director: Sara Moore
USA: 1998
With: Quentin Crisp, Lea de Laria, Stephen Sorrentino

The vulgar and loud drag queen Maria Callous rules the all-gay city of Homo Heights with an iron hand, defying anyone to take on his mafia bodyguards. Quentin Crisp (in his final movie) plays Maria's pet: An old, movie-struck bird-lover and gay relic who longs to fly away from Homo Heights, or die in the attempt.

What happens to him? See for yourself!

This wacky, not very subtle fairy tale is probably unintelligible to a straight audience, as the characters are extremely bitchy and outlandish. If you hate "screaming queens" this movie will get in your face! It's almost like a queer pantomime production of "the Wizard of Oz" in fancy dress. Often funny, but very, very odd. Yngvar

Homolulu show , The
( alternative title Love is love)
Norway: 2004: Short 1 min:
Directed by Frank Mosvold

This may pop up at your local queer film festival. A little vignette about a homely gay couple
living in Homolulu where homosexuality is the norm. It turns homo/straight marriages on its head, basically it's a one-joke movie. 2 of Norway's famous male actors play the gay couple, sharing a kiss at the end. The dialogue is in English, as it was ordered by an American company to be shown on US TV. Yngvar
Note: The kiss was cut, though. You can't show two men kissing on TV over there. Maybe it will change soon !

Homo Promo
Director: Jenni Olson
USA: 1993: lack and White / Color: 62 mins: Homosexual Movie Trailers:

I love gay movie history and this is one of those films about it. There was a time in Hollywood that in order to see a new film they played trailers of the new films along with the showing of the main film. This film takes you on a journey from 1956 to 1976. It has 27 trailers and traces the history of gay / lesbian films showing these trailers. They get more and more daring as gay films became more and more the norm. As sit back and enjoy this film as you will be shocked at the progress gay / lesbian films have made and how they compare to the almost normal accepted films of today. This is a must see film....

Honky tonk freeway
Directed by John Schlesinger
USA 1981
With: William Devane, Beau Bridges, Hume Cronyn:

4 gay guys in a jeep appear on the edge of this comedy about American stereotypes. They look like macho gay men were supposed to look at the time: Fit, tan and hairy. They dance a lot and rip off their T-shirts a lot. They have very small parts.Eh…I mean: They are only in a couple of scenes!

Director John Schlesinger made the early classics Midnight cowboy and Sunday, bloody Sunday. You could say he has done more for gay lib in movies than any other director.Yngvar

Hours and the Times, The
Director: Christopher Munch
UK: 1991: 58 minutes: Gay: Biographical Drama
With: David Angus as Epstein and Ian Hart as Lennon (he repeated this role in the film : Backbeat in 1994):

This film is a What Might Have Happened - if just before the Beatles rise to fame the Beatles manager Brian Epstein takes John Lennon to Barcelona for a four day vacation. In this film - John Lennon is a straight as they come so the story revolves of the love which Brian keep showing to John. It is also interesting as Brian was from a very well to do Jewish family and John was from a lower class working family. A strange fantasy film which could have happened ! Phillip

How Do I Look
Director: Wolfgang Busch
USA: 2006: 80 mins

Every once in awhile comes a film project made from the heart and real love. This is one of those films.

I had seen "Paris Is Burning" and the "Vogue video from Madonna" but it was more like a show to me.

Now comes along this film which was made by Director Wolfgang Busch. It took 10 years of his life to make it and the research and incite into the subject is immediately felt.

It traces voguing to the beginning (30 year history all the way back to Harlem) and then tells us the history up to now.It captures the fast pace in the filming of these talented guy and girls but it is so well done that you can follow the entire fast paced story

I do not know how Wolfgang Busch was able to get all these people on film or how he was able to trace the entire history of them but he did it and now has in the end the complete history of it on film!

I can honestly now understand what these talented & good looking people are about and what they have been trying to show us on the runway.
www.HowDoILookNYC.org
The film is set a fire with the interviews and scenes of Voguing and it will always be preserved in this film and now has become a part of our history.

The guys and girls´s stories fly out to you from the film and you understand what they have tried all their lives to say to us and the outside world.

I love Documentaries but this one is excellent and a must see..

I watched every minute of it absorbing the performances and the history of the people who do it... and i can highly recommend this film.

So sit down and enjoy this film as i did...and if you are organizing a film festival by all means get this film for it – I am sure it will be a highlight.

I hope we do not have to wait 10 years to get to see the next Film of Wolfgang Busch.

How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog
USA: 2000, 108 mins:
With: Kenneth Bring, Robin Wright Penn, Suzi Hofrichter, Johnathon Schae, Lynn Redgrave, Jared Harris, Peter Riegert and David Krumholtz:

Oh my! This film is filmed in the year 2000 and it is still showing a gay stereotype. The gay director of a new play by Peter McGowan (Kenneth Branagh) is a great director but he lisps and acts the sissy type. In the 40´s - 70´s we were satisfied if the was a queen in a film but now we are past that and if there is to be a queenie type- why can’t we have a counter person who is hunky and manly - after all we are not all queens are we ?? Oh well.... see the film for yourself - at least there is a dog to keep you interested... *smile* Phillip
