 Cabaret
Director: Bob Fosse
USA : 1972 : 124 minutes: Musical bisexual:
With : Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles, Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies, Michael York as Brian Roberts, Helmut Griem as Maximilian von Heune, Fritz Wepper as Fritz Wendel and Marisa Berenson as Natalia Landauer:

This is Berlin in the 1930's and the time of anything goes. Sally Bowles is an American singer who works at the KIt-Kat club and lives in Berlin. Then along comes Brian, who is an English teacher and thinks that Berlin is the place to be something he can't in England. He meets Sally and moves into her boarding house, sharing some rooms. They are very opposites but some how match. They fall (sort of) in love, but then along comes Helmut who is rich, handsome and fun loving. He takes advantage of both of them and seduces then separately. Sally gets pregnant, and Brian offers to marry her but she decides not to have the baby and the relationship slowly ends. All the time in the back ground are glimpses Germany being taken over by the Nazis. Joel Grey is wonderful at the master of ceremonies .

Note: this story was originally filmed as " I Am a Camera" in 1955. It's different and all is implied rather than shown but still worth a look In this version you will hear the famous lines from Brian and Sally who are having a fight:
Brian: Fuck Maximilian!
Sally: I did.
Brian: So did I.

France : 1981 : 91 - 101 minutes : Comedy : gay : transvestitism : longtime gay relationship:
With : Michel Serrault as Albin/"Zaza", Ugo Tognazzi as Renato, and Benny Luke as Jacob:

Albin feels neglected by Renato and decided to show him that he still has sex appeal. He gets on his best drag and ends up in a hotel with a very young man who ends up dead. The rest of the movie they are chased and used by the police. They end up at Renato's mother house (in Italy) where Albin is treated as one of the "girls" but this time he doesn't like it.Phillip

Cage Aux Folles III, La
AKA : Cage aux Folles 3: Wedding)
Director : George Lautner
France: 1986: 87 minutes : Gay : Transvestite : Comedy : longtime gay relationship :
With : Michel Serrault  as Albin/"Zaza", Ugo Tognazzi as Renato:

Thank god they didn't make a part 4. This one is really bad and doesn't seem to go with the other two films - can it be because there is a new director ? Or can it be because the subject was good for two films and that's all. In this one you are to believe that Albin has to get married and father a son within 18 months, if he is to inherit the family fortune which he needs to save his and Renato's nightclub. Phillip
Note: Just keep your fingers crossed that they don't remake this one as even Albin can't save it. Only for hard core "La Cage Folles" fans.

Camp

Director: Todd Graff

USA: 2003: 114 mins:

You have read about camps to lose weight well this is about a camp which is for kids who want to be in Musicals / Theater. The camp produced a new work every two weeks and the kids have work hard to keep up the pace. Most of them do not fit into the norm at home but here they seem to fit. The main character is Michael who likes to dress as a woman and goes to his High School prom dress as such and get beat up by the other guy but at this camp he is fully accepted and allowed to be himself. There is also a very handsome boy called Vlad and he will do just about anything with anyone to be accepted and make the other person happy. Will Vlad make Michael also happy – see this film filled with musical numbers and problems - which have to be solved in one summer. I liked this film a lot and the range of different characters made it especially interesting but most of all I liked Michael…Phillip

Campillo si, quiero
Spain 2007
Directed by Andrès Rubio

Documentary about a little village in Spain where the mayor conducts gay weddings. When the Spanish government passed the new law in 2005, a lot of Spanish cities refused to wed gay couples. But in Campillo de Ranas (population around 50 people) the mayor stepped forward and said yes. As a result, gay tourists are streaming into the village to get married, the economy in Campillo is rocketing, new restaurants have opened and the mayor has become famous (he was even featured in TIME magazine.

I went to the movie première in Oslo, where the director and the mayor of Campillo himself was in the audience. After the screening they answered questions about the film, which is a complete charmer. The people in Campillo are open-minded and generous, the mayor is a really nice guy who everybody loves, there is a sense of joy in living and you wonder why all places can't be like this. The mayor told us that he conducts 80 weddings a year while the town's Catholic priest conducts 3-4. This summer the mayor himself marries his boyfriend in Campillo. Shot on hi-def video, it's a life-affirming documentary.Yngvar

Director : Nancy Walker
USA : 1980 : dance disco gay music :
With : Village People, Valerie Perrine as Samantha Simpson, Bruce Jenner as Ron White, Steve Guttenberg as Jack Morel, Paul Sand as Steve Waits and Tammy Grimes as Sydney Channing:

This film was the end for the Village People. The studios created an almost non gay group out of an almost all gay group. The fans did not stand for it -OK - OK, the end of disco also did it to them. The film is interesting to see - it could would have been better if the true story of the group had been told and not the "don't ask - don't tell" version Just in case your interested or need the information for a trivia games or want to educate your younger lover, here are the names of the Village People:

This is the horrible story of the prision with sickness and dangerous criminals but also has a story line about          transexuals who have sex with the other prisioners including gay men plus there is a "marriage" between a            transexual and another prisioner. Phillip

Dora Carrington was a British painter who was very shy and existed only within the so-called Bloomsbury Group of writers and painters. This is set in the period of World War I England when she meets homosexual Lytton Strachey who is 15 years older, wears a beard and doesn't seem to be the right match for her. But as we know, things are not always what you think they will be and as it turned out they had a 17 year platonic relationship which in fact lasted longer than all his affairs -mostly with heterosexual men and her relationship with Ralph Partridge. This film shows a relationship which is unique and goes against all odds.Phillip

With: Daniel de Oliveira, Andréa Beltrão, Emílio de Melo, Débora Falabella, Reginaldo Farias, Cadu Fávero, André Gonçalves, Leandra Leal and Marieta Severo:

The movie is a kind of a portrait of Cazuza, a very famous brazilian singer who died of AIDS in 1990 Rio De Janeiro, 11 of June of 1980, a very young guy sings a song in English. It could be only plus one among innumerable aspiring to the success however Cazuza became in one of the most important idols of Brazil when the youth of Rio de janeiro Love to live "a vida louca" (the wild life).

The diagnosis of that he was carrying of the virus HIV was received by the young artist with desperation, followed of the search of new forms of treatment for an illness that at the time represented a death sentence, and it was exactly under this conviction that Cazuza gave tests of an courage without precedents in the country: he displayed the illness and his physical deterioration was presented in public in amazing shows, he did not hide the pleasures that remained and his feelings.

He did not respect orders neither recommendations, and his life was a perfect consequence of one of preferred lines: ''i ''prefer to live 10 years in a thousand kilometers than a thousand years in 10''..

With Lily Tomlin as the Narrator

This is based on the book of the same title. What can you say about a film that has clips from over 100 gay films and interviews with people like Quentin Crisp, Mart Crowley, Tony Curtis, Richard Dyer, Harvey Fierstein, Whoopi Goldberg, Farley Granger, Harry Hamlin, Tom Hanks, Arthur Laurents, Shirley MacLaine, Armistead Maupin, John Schlesinger, Gore Vidal plus many more:

This is our history as seen in the movies. It should be seen as it has been a long struggle to finally get movies who show us in the way we really are in all our diversity and not as, strange effeminate people who live in the dark waiting to seduce people, wear woman's clothes all the time and kill ourselves as we were supposed to do. As you view the older films you will see we have moved light years ahead.Phillip

Chachi 420
Director: Kamal Hassan
India
: 1998 : 159 mins :

With: Kamal Hassan as Jaiprakash Paswan/Laxmi Godbhole; Tabu as Janki Paswan; Johnny Walker as Joseph; Om Puri as Banwarilal Pandey; Amrish Puri as Durgaprasad Bhardwaj; Paresh Rawal as Hariharan 'Haribhai'; Ayesha Jhulka as Ratna

The English meaning of Chachi is Aunty and '420' is a number used in India to indicate that someone is a dubious character.

This movie is inspired by the Hollywood film Mrs Doubtfire, but it's in true Indian style with a Bollywood flavour.  The film starts with a typical Bollywood story that a poor dance choreographer Jayaprakash Paswan (Kamal Haasan) falls in love with Janki (Tabu), who is the only daughter of millionaire Durgaprasad (Amrish Puri).  Even though Durgaprasad was not in favour of their marriage, they got married against his wishes.  After a few years they started to have marital problems due to their differing backgrounds.  They eventually got divorced and Janki is given custody of their daughter Bharati.  After losing visiting rights to Bharati, Jayaprakash decides to take the job of baby sitting at Durgaprasad's home in order to see his daughter.  So using the help of his friend, movie make-up man Joseph (Johnny Walker) who transforms him into a woman, Mrs Lakshmi Godbole, Mrs Godbole wins everybody's heart.  Durgaprasad even wishes to marry Mrs Godbole.  Jayaprakash's landlord Haribhai (Paresh Rawal) also wishes to marry Mrs Godbole and it creates a lot of confusion and fun.  Eventually Janki realises her mistake and goes back to Jayaprakash who she really loves.

Very good performances by main actors and a lot of laughs – that's the main attraction of this movie. Manish

Changing Times
A.K.A.: Les Temps qui changent
Director: André Téchiné
France: 2004, 100 mins:in French with English subtitles
With: Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Gilbert Melki, Malik Zidi:

This French film is basically about two lovers who meet 30 later with one of them hoping to make the relationship work this time.

The reason this film is listed here (other than the great performances by Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu) is that Sami (played by Malik Zidi) is the bisexual son who has a girlfriend and a young son but to top that off he has a Moroccan boyfriend called Bilal. When he and his family are about to leave he buys Bilal a ticket so he can come to Paris. If you keep your eyes open and look closely there is a frontal nude scene between the two men.

There are so few films about bisexual people that I am always happy to review the films when they DO come out. So have a peek at this really good film.Phillip ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Chasing Amy
USA: 1997:
Directed by Kevin Smith
With: Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee
Gay comedy-drama

Affleck plays a cartoonist who falls in love with a girl he meets in a cafe.
Turns out she's not also a fellow cartoonist, but a lesbian too!
What will he do about it? What CAN he do about it?
Ben also has a very close male friend who probably loves him without knowing it.

The third movie Smith wrote with a New Jersey background and it's a semi-classic.
The dilemma of loving someone who can't love you back is treated in an
adult way and not just as an excuse for cheap laughs. Watch out for the
solution Ben comes up with for keeping all three of them together! Great scenes from
a gay club and real, intimate performances all the way. Watch this! Yngvar

Note: This film is very seldom shown so see it when it finally shows up on TV.

Christopher and Gordy Norway 2004: Animated short 4 min. / English dialogue:
Directors: Tom Petter Hansen and Frank Mosvold:

This short is made in the "South Park" cut and paste animated style, and made the whole audience laugh out loud at the Oslo Queer-film festival! The story about Chris and Gordy is a satire on the life of George Bush, including his earlier rowdy days and his conversion to fundamentalist Christian views. However, the ending takes everyone by surprise! Yngvar

Chronically Unfeasible
(Original title: CRONICAMENTE INVIÁVEL)
Director:: Sergio Bianchi
Brazil: 1999: Gay Main Character

Six different characters are discussing the difficulties involved in surviving, both mentally and physically, in the chaotic Brazilian society. These situations revolve around a restaurant in São Paulo, owned by Luis (Cecil Thiré). He is a refined, good-mannered gay man in his fifties who likes to have sex with his waiters. There is a scene where two of them go to a gay steam house where there is a happening called the "Best Butt Award " , it´s an explicit scene with a lot of of nudity. Alfredo (Umberto Magnani) is a writer engaged in a strange journey around the country and attempts to understand, through a bitter view of reality, the problems of social oppression and domination. Adam (Dan Stulbach) - just arriving from the southern state of Paraná, is the new waiter in Luis' restaurant and stands out among the other employees because of his European ancestry. Maria Alice (Betty Goffman) comes from Rio de Janeiro's upper middle-class and is always trying to keep a minimum amount of humanity when dealing with people from the lower classes. She is married to Stiewertos (Daniel Dantas), a man who has a pragmatic view of life and believes in rationality as a way of taking personal advantage of the country's social instability. Amanda (Dira Paes), the restaurant's manager, is a captivating woman with an obscure past.

Chutney Popcorn
Director: Nisha Ganatra
USA: 90 minutes: Lebian main characters:
With: Nisha Ganatra, Jill Hennessy, Nick Chinlund, Madhur Jaffrey, Sakina Jaffrey, Cara Buono and Ajay Naidu

Chutney Popcorn is an off beat comedy about a lesbian couple and a heterosexual couple. Two of the women are sisters and Sarita (straight) finds out she can not have children. Her sister is lesbian and can have a child. The film moves on to her decision to have a child for her sister and brother-in-law but first she has to convince her girlfriend that this is the right thing to do. Also very interesting is the way the Indian family value have mixed with the New York City values to create this multi-culture film. Phillip

Citizen Cohn
Director : Frank Pierson
USA : 1992 : TV : Action Drama aids communism gay mccarthyism :
With : James Woods as Roy Marcus Cohn, Pat Hingle as Hoover and Joe Don Baker as Senator Joseph McCarthy:

This is a very hard film to watch. It is a film about a gay person who somehow manages to destroy other gay people without a bit of remorse, along with many other people. Roy Cohn only wants to get ahead in his career by attaching himself to Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy, as his Chief Counsel in the late 1950's - the time when America was afraid of the Communists and seemed to see everyone different as a Communist. Through this horrible man, many people suffered but in the end he died of AIDS - alone and old - in a New York hospital. This is a good "made for TV" film which deals with America's past but is still horrible to see how a person can sell himself to "the" devil not never care for other lives - gay or straight - that he destroyed. Phillip

Clapham Junction
UK: 2007: Made for TV
Director: Adrian Shergold
Writer: Kevin Elyot :
With: Tom Beard: as Roger Hopkirk, James Bellamyas the Black Youth 2, Robin Berry as the Man in Toilet 2, Rachael Blake as Belinda Hopkirk, Samantha Bond as Marion Rowan, Stuart Bunce as Gavin, Philip Childs as the Newscaster, Richard Freeman as the Registrar, Rupert Graves as Robin Cape, Stephen Hagan as the TV Assistant, Jefferson Hall as the Mail Man, Johnny Harris as theTough Man, Francis Lee as Murray, David Leon as Alfie, Richard Lintern as Will:

This is a 2007 made for English TV film and a very interesting film.. I have just finished watching it and wanted to let you know about it.

There are so many gay men in this story with so much happening to them it is almost impossible to write this review but I will try ( if you check out the list of actors in the film you will see what I mean):

If it had been shown as a weekly soap I can honestly tell you I would have turned in each week for see what was happening but I was spared that and luckily It was shown in one go – good decision !

On the bad side was a guy who picks up a trick and then beats him to a bloody pulp – this part i really disliked although i know it does happen in real life ...Plus a second rough sex scene in a toilette and two thugs who want to beat up the waiter. These story lines are not my style or taste but the director and writer seem to want to show the full spectrum of gay life Anyway i just fast forwarded these to get over the scenes fast !unless you like blood violent story lines.

I remember also a film called Cruising which had one guy killing a lot of gay men. I thought we were over that but i guess not.

There is a gay marriage (and a cruise on a waiter from one of the grooms!!!) There is also the feeling that the writer wants to say that ALL of us cruise for sex in strange places and violence is what we get for it.

I think the violence side should have been played down and more of the positive side of the story should have been shown but that is my thoughts and you will just have to see the film to decide for yourself ! Phillip

Clay Farmers
Director: A.P. Gonzalez
Writer: Michael Moore
USA: 1988: 60 mins:
With: Nicholas Rempel as Mike and Todd Fraser as Dan:

This film had all the ingredients to be a really good film. The young guys are great to look at and the story that one of them is an outsider in a small community left open a lot of conflicts.

Instead the two young guys (who work on a farm in California) are very happy together but NOTHING happens between them. You have to rewrite the story line in your mind to get a real relationship out of this. Although they spend all their spare time together and swim in the nude together a relationship is not really established. Plus towards the end they seem to be planning a move away from the town – together ...

There is child abuse by a father and the oyung son reaches out to the two guys putting them in a very bad position as the father hates one of the guy (you are lead to suspect that it is because he is either an outsider or thought to be gay).

Anyway the one guy leaves and his friend is all alone and you never got to know their true story or if they were really in love.

The film is 60 mins so worth a see if only for the good looking “maybe” lovers. Phillip
