Bambola
Director: Jose Juan Bigas Luna
Italy/UK/France: 1996: 92 mins: gay main character
With: Valeria Marini, Stefano Dionisi, Jorge Perugorría, Manuel Bandera, Antonio Iuorio, Anita Ekberg:

Bambola is a very pretty girl who had a gay brother called Flavio. Their mother (Anita Ekberg) dies and they open a Pizzeria with money lent by a banker friend Ugo. One day they decide to have a little fun and go to a swimming pool and nothing will be the same after that day trip. Bambola and Flavio see Settimo who is a super well built and handsome guy and both want him but he has eyes only for Bambola. There is a fight, a person is killed and Settimo ends up in jail where he is raped over and over by men and when he gets out he is offered a life with Flavio (rather stupid to think a straight can become gay while prison). Bambola life is taken by a rough man who hates everyone and comes to her when he is out of the prison. This all can only spell disaster waiting to happen.

Note: I was a little taken back that a new film could suggest that you can make a homosexual out of a heterosexual by raping him over and over but if one ignores that fact the rest of the film is very interesting ! Phillip

B.E. - dirty, sinful me
(original title: B.E. - skitne, syndige meg)
Norway: 1999: Gay documentary
Director: Jan Dalchow

One of the most controversial movies made in Norway during 1999. Bjørn-Erik was a gay 19 year old who decided to kill himself rather than face the music. As a devoted Christian, he felt he couldn't live a "dirty and sinful" life. He didn't seek guidance, and he got none.

In this documentary his family and friends, a gay Lutheran couple and some Christian fundamentalists vent their views on homosexuality. Through it all, we hear snippets from Bjørn Erik's diary, his self-confession.

It's heartbreaking stuff, and a real eye-opener. The newspapers and TV-stations made this a top story, and thankfully, the public reacted by demanding youth-counseling reforms. Many teenagers commit suicide just because they're gay in Norway. This is a shame we shouldn't permit in a modern society! Yngvar

But the tranquility comes to an end when Violeta and her companion are arrested and imprisoned for years in India. With : Rip Torn as Walt Witman and the Doctor played by Colm Feore:

This is the filming of Walt Witman´s life: He lived and wrote poetry in the Victorian times and it is surprising that he was as sexual liberated and open in those times. The film shows his relationship with a younger Doctor played by Colm Feore which causes a scandal. Very good film and a really good drama. Oh just in case you ever see it - there is a wonderful recording of Walt Witman poems which are very erotic and often tell of the pleasures of loving both men and women. Hard to believe he wrote these poems in the Victorian times. Phillip

Being at Home with Claude
Director: Jean Beaudin
Canada : 1991- 92 : 85 mins:
With Roy Dupuis, Jean-Francois Pichette, and Jacques Godin:

I have just finished watching this film in French with English subtitles. At first i thought it was going to be a long boring film about a hustler and the crime he committed but it turns out to be a very interesting film about a handsome street hustler and a student who fall in love. One of them is murdered by the other and the rest of the film involved long discussions between the police officer in charge and the hustler. Then in many Black and White flashbacks the story of their meeting and love affair falls into place with touching dialog then a confession is reached. Contains hot erotic sex scenes for its time and the the hustler is absolutely beautiful although not beautiful enough to want to be murdered by him *smile*. Phillip

Note: Based on play by Rene-Daniel Dubois and filmed in French with English subtitles (although the subtitles are not as good as they should be and should be redone !)

Ben-Hur
Director: Fred Niblo
USA : 1926 : 141 min.: filmed in B/W : Drama
With : Ramon Novarro and Francis X Bushman:

This is the early filming of Ben Hur - which is the story of Ben-Hur and Messala who have a special friendship together. This filming should be noted and seen as Ramon Novarro was a gay actor and if you watch carefully there is a naked slave chained to a wall in one of the scenes. Phillip

Ben-Hur
Director: William Wyler
USA: 1959: 212 mins: Drama: Special Male friendship
With: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur and Stephan Boyd as Messala:

This is the later filming of the relationship between Ben-Hur and Messala who have loved each other since childhood. It is said that Stephan Boyd was told the two had been lovers but were separated and now that he was back in Rome he wants to renew the love affair but Ben-Hur does not. If you watch that scene is it played as two lovers seeing each other again after a long separation. Also the makers of the film have said if they had left out the girl the picture would have been a better picture - and I think they are right! It is fun to watch this film knowing the secret as it does have the feel of gay lovers - even with the dialog and scene cutting that is said to have gone on during the filming.
Note : Gore Vidal helped write the script but was not credited. Phillip

Bent
Director: Sean Mathias
UK: 1997: 104 mins:
With: Clive Owen Lothaire Bluteau and Mick Jager

I had read the Bent in book form but I kept putting off seeing the film as I knew it would be a hard experience for me but I finally took a friends advice and that evening I went alone to the cinema and watched the film. It starts out light and eerie with Mick Jager doing a song in drag. Then comes the repression from the Nazi´s against the gays and the gays had to take care of themselves i whichever way they could to try and keep alive. My heart pounded at the thought that someone like the Nazi´s could take my life away from me at their own will. The two lovers of the film are put through hell and torture (too graphic to go into here). They are forced to separate and pretend that they are not gay. Then the story switches from the long train ride (with torture) to the Nazi concentration where gays were treated as the lowest people there. Although the main character finds ways of surviving and even having sexual activities in his mind. This is only the story of a few but there were many gays treated like and it can never never happen again !

Note: This film is a MUST see for all gay and lesbian people ! We have it good in this day and age but when radical groups come into power they could take that all away again and WE MUST never let that happen again NEVER ! A good way is to be informed and this film helps. I sat glued to the seat and i felt all the good things and bad things happening on the screen and I must admit it scared the hell out of me... So if you have one film to see which will change your way of looking at life - SEE THIS FILM !!!

It seem incredible that they are NOW talking in Germany of reversing all the convictions against gays and lesbians from the Nazi time. This should have been done many years ago... ! These poor people have lived their lives with a conviction against them on their records and it should be changed NOW !!! I can not  imagine what things these poor men and women have gone through with first the Nazis and then the discrimination against them during the years that followed ! Phillip

With Jon Øigarden, Andrine Sæter, Bjørn Sundquist, Espen Skjønberg:

Brilliantly dark and painfully Norwegian TV miniseries that will probably play in most European countries, so here’s a review. It is based on two best-selling books by Norwegian author Anne B Ragde, who is popular in countries like Denmark and Germany.

The story revolves around a very, very dysfunctional family. There is a huge family skeleton in the closet, and because of this, everyone suffers. 3 brothers (well, actually four, but see for yourself..) are re-united when their mother dies. The youngest of them is gay Erlend (Øigarden, a respected thespian in Norway) who lives in Copenhagen with his lover.

They have a perfect existence, nice apartment, steady jobs, good friends. What can go wrong?

Well, quite a lot, and the mother dying is just the start...seems young Erlend was rejected by

his family and bears the scars for it..

Note: There are 6 episodes, with more to come. It was well received in Norway.Yngvar

Best Man, The
Director: Franklin Schaffner
USA : 1964 : 103 mins: Drama with Gay rumors
With : Henry Fonda as William Russel (the first Candidate) and Cliff Robertson as Joe Cantwell (the second Candidate):

Gore Vidal wrote the play for this (was a big success in 1960) and then the screen play. It is the story of American politics and the race to become President. The race becomes ugly when one candidate decides to play dirty and expose the others psychological problems from the past. Well one nasty deed deserves another so they dig into the past of the other candidate and find a "secret". That secret turns out to be that the other candidate is supposed to be gay. This turns out to be untrue and it also turns out that this candidate helped turn in the two men (officers) who were gay (hum - and he seemed proud of it too !). Anyway movies like this paved the way for the newer really gay movies! You have to start somewhere right? Phillip

Best in Show
USA: 2000:
Direction: Christopher Guest
With: Bob Balaban (Dr. Theodore W. Millbank), Jennifer Coolidge (Sherri Ann Cabot), Christopher Guest (Harlan Pepper), John Michael Higgins (Scott Donlan), Eugene Levy (Gerry Fleck), Michael Hitchcock (Hamilton Swan) and Jane Lynch (Christy Cummings):

Another one of Guest’s unprepossessing comedies, with his steady band of actors doing their best to make you laugh. It revolves around a dog show in Philadelphia, with the finest dog breeders in USA competing for the Grand Prize. A documentary team follows some of the contesting couples, among them two very effeminate, but lovable gay men from Tribeca, New York. Played by John Michael Higgins and Michael McKean in a pair of brilliant impersonations. Hey, I know these people!! The scene where they call home to make sure their other dogs don’t watch too much TV while they’re away is a solid scream!

Some people don’t like Christopher’s Guest comedies because they’re not flashy enough. I personally love them. Yngvar

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason   UK/ USA/ France 2004: 108 mins.
Directed by Beeban Kidron
With: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant

If you manage to drag yourself through 90 minutes of "funny" heterosexual angst, obnoxious Hugh Grant, pouting Renee Zellweger and upper class twit Colin Firth, there is a nice gay twist at the end of it all. In fact, it's crucial to the story line.
The story itself happens in a never-never land populated with cartoon characters of no special human interest. Everything is so unbelievably corny you really shouldn't be bothered to watch. Bridget also has a gay friend who fits all the bad stereotypes like a glove.
Still, the ending is sort of worth the pain...

Biches, Les
(a.k.a. THE DOES/BAD GIRLS/Girlfriends)
Director: Claude Chabrol
France: 1968: 95 mins: Lesbian/Bisexual Interest
With Stephane Audran, Jacqueline Sassard, Jean-Louis Trintignant:

Claude Chabrol was arguably at his directorial peak when he made “Les Biches” in 1968. Chabrol’s then-wife Stephane Audran delivers a stylish performance as Frederique, a beautifully cool seductress who picks up a young street artist enigmatically named ‘Why’ and takes her back to St Tropez to keep her warm for the winter. Acte 1 concludes with what must be one of the most subtly erotic seduction scenes in cinema, played by two actresses who knew what they were doing.

The two women’s relationship progresses to a point of almost domesticity until handsome Paul, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, appears on the scene. Paul quickly seduces ‘Why’, who seems to sleep with him out of mere curiosity, much to the chagrin of Frederique. Unwilling to be defeated, Frederique visits Paul and makes him her own.

The film shifts into what could have been an inferior mÈnage-a-trois storyline in the hands of any other director. Yet Chabrol manages to create an increasingly suffocating atmosphere, permeated with sexual egotism and emotional game playing. “Les Biches” is a film that demands repeated viewing.

On an interesting note: the film includes a male homosexual couple who are depicted as eccentric hanger-ons/court jesters, but not in the usual effeminate way as would be seen a decade later in the famous French film “La Cage Aux Folles”. Kimmy

Big daddy
USA: 1999: Gay minor characters
Director: Dennis Dugan
With Adam Sandler and Joey Lauren Adams

A dirty, but sometimes very funny comedy about a single guy, Sonny, who ends up taking care of a small kid. Sonny has two gay friends, Phil and Tommy. They are a grown-up and responsible couple, everything Sonny is not. His idea of a good laugh is abusing the elderly and rattling off fart jokes to small children. You know..a real pain. So, Sonny has to learn to grow up and be a responsible father.

This is probably the commercially most successful picture ever to feature a gay kiss, even beating In & out at the box-office. Plus, it's shot in the gay capital of the east, New York City! Yngvar

Big Eden
Director: Thomas Bezucha
USA: 2000: 117mins:
With: Arye Gross as Henry, Eric Schweig as Pike, George Coe, Louise Fletcher, Tim Dekay and Nan Martin:

This is a good film about what happens when you return home and resuming old flames and a possible new one. It is set in Montana (hum a gay story line in Montana wow things are progressing *smile* and is the story of Henry Hart who is a gay artist. He returns to Big Eden (nice name for a town) Montana, as his grandfather is ill. He had a romance 20 years ago with Dean (his high school prince) but left the town due to the fact that Dean was basically a Heterosexual. It took Henry years to get over Dean and now he was back and faced with coming face to face with his high school prince again and all the feelings he had / has for him. In the background is a possible suitor and he is Pike Dexter who is a Native American, shy and owns the local general store. The minute he see Henry he knows he has feelings for him and sets about to work his way into Henry s life. He starts learning to cook so he can feed Henry s grandfather and get close to Henry. To find out who gets Henry see this film, which has a very good story line and really good performances in this "can you go back" story! The film also makes you think of what would happen if you returned to your home town / city and met up again with your High School Prince - mine is probably married with 2 or 3 kids and not at all what I imagine him to be -what do they say "you can never go back" but would n’t it be fun to do it just as it happens in this film? Phillip

Bigger Splash, A
Director: Mike Nichols
GB : 1974 : 90 min.: A gay fantasy and bio of David Hockney
With : David Hockney as himself and all his friends and lovers also play themselves:

This was a thrilling film - here is a gay artist who was willing to be out, play himself and tell his true story of himself and his lover on film. WOW that took guts to do ! It traces the life of painter David Hockney who is going through a love affair with Peter Schlessinger (who is both young and hunk) for a 3 year period. We are able to trace the relationship through the photos and paintings of their time together. There are also a lot of Hockney dreams where he see his lover in bed with other men. This film is a must to see and even though it is over 24 years old it still holds up.Phillip

Director: Kevin Allen:
USA 1999:
With: Craig Ferguson and Frances Fisher:

Gay Scottish hair-stylist Crawford McKenzie wants to enter the famous Platinum Scissors competition in LA, but it's not easy. First, Crawford has to prove his skill, and grease up the right people!

This funny little satire is played like a pseudo-documentary. There's a camera guy and a reporter following Crawford around, a bit like "This is Spinal Tap". The competition itself features some wild hairdos. Funny what you can do with hair! In between are some celebrity cameos (e.g. Drew Carey), but sadly - no Sean Connery (though his name is thrown about a lot). We also visit a gay disco and meet a couple of very bitchy stylists. There are some good laughs to be had, so by all means, rent this one. Yngvar

Birdcage, The
Director: Mike Nichols
USA : 1996 : 118 min.: Comedy drag farce gay political transvestitism
With Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman and Dan Futterman:

What to say about this film? It is the American remake of La Cage aux Folles (which was originally play). Did the French film do it better or is the USA version better - watch it and decide for yourself. So here is the story: Armand and Albert are in this film and in this version owns a well known drag nightclub in South Miami Beach called the Birdcage. Albert is the transvestite star who is getting on in years and is getting more and more difficult to handle by Armand. Armand  handles the business side of the club. They have been together for over 20 years and are very out to all who know them. Then comes the son Val, who they raised together (the son came from a one time straight 0ne time  fling Armand had with a woman) and tells his father he is getting married to Barbara who is the daughter of A US-Senator and the Vice President of the Committee for Moral Order. He wants his father to pretend to be straight and get his real mom to come for a dinner. Albert is hurt by all this since he raised Val and feels left out of Vals life plus after being "out" for so many years it is almost impossible for them to go back in the closet even for one night. The "real " mother is delayed and Albert takes over as the Mother. What follows is chaos ! Of course there is more to the story with "big" production drag numbers. Phillip

The only other reason to watch this film is you get a good scene with Mel´s naked ass. Phillip

Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, The
[Original title : Bitteren Traenen der Petra von Kant, Die]
Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Germany (West): 1972: 124 mins: Lesbian Main Characters
With: Margit Carstensen, Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann and Katrin Schaake:

Petra von Kant is very successful as a fashion designer who is both arrogant and self centered. She has a secretary who is also the maid and co-designer and who in general makes life miserable for. The Karin enters into her life. Karin is 23 very pretty and wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and ask her to move in with her. The film then deals with the emotions of this affair while it is happening and when it ends.

Note: Fassbinder uses very long scenes which are shot in one take causing the film to have a very special look to it. He also uses music from the Platters and Giuseppe Verdi which also lends to the mood of the film. Phillip

Black and White

Director / Writer: Claire Devers
France: 1986: B/W: 80 mins.: Gay S/M drama
With: Marc Berman, Francis Frappat as Antoine, Josephine Fresson as Edith, Jacques Martial as Dominique and Benoit Regent:

This is a very strange but good B/W French film. It deals with a very inexperienced young man who is an accountant at a sport club. He gets involved with a man who works there as a masseur and they enter into a very strange S/M relationship which can only end in a disaster!. The build up of their relationship into full blown S/M is very interesting to watch. Even if you are not into S/M this film is still interesting to see. By the way it is not a porno film ! and the title refers to the two men -one is black and the other one is white. Phillip

Blackmail Boy
(Original title: Oxygono)
Directors: Thanasis Papathansaiou Michalis Reppas
Greece: 2003: 100 mins:

Very complicated story of a Greek family with tons of characters and tons of dialog. What will interest the “Movies Too Gay” watcher is that it was a very hunky young Greek boy is sleeping with an older married man. There are a few quiet hot scenes with two of them but only the older man is shown nude and the younger hunk is shown only in his rather boring underpants (although he still looks good).  Try to see the film with sub titles in your own language and prepare to read a lot due to the long chatty dialog. Blackwater Lightship, The
USA 2004 : Made for cable TV drama : 120 mins with commercials:
Director: John Erman
With: Angela Lansbury, Dianne Wiest, Brian O Murphy, Gina McKee

This is a beautifully shot film about three generations of strong Irish women meeting to care for and ultimately part with the gay son of the family, dying of AIDS. The actors are superb, and the Irish actors more than hold their own. The magical Irish coastline is captured in luminous photography. I just love Ireland. You should, too!

I guess it’s a great TV family drama. Produced by Hallmark Hall of Fame, no less!

Still, I must admit I’m getting a bit tired of this storyline. There have been dozens of dramas with dying gay sons and the family coming together to reconcile and heal old wounds etc. etc. etc. It’s just so....predictable..
Thing is, these films are not about being gay at all. You don’t get to see gay love or gay sex in them, AIDS just happen to be the disease du jour, someone has to die to bring the family together again, see? And you know -  dying gay guys = AIDS.

It could be cancer, it used to be tuberculosis. Anything, really, as long as they die, and the other family members cry and make up. So, really this film is not for gay audiences. They are made for people who like to feel sorry for themselves and others. Yngvar

Blades of glory
USA 2007
Directors: Josh Gordon and Will Speck
With: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder

Funny, but uneven comedy about two male figure-skaters competing for the World Championships. They share the gold, but deeply hate each other and start fighting on the podium during the National anthem ceremony. Disqualified for life from ice-skating, they find a loop-hole in the rules, and start competing as a Pair!

This situation would make for some great queer jokes, but really, the gay angle is almost completely absent from the script. (I think the word "gay" is mentioned once) Jon Heder plays a very queeny ice-skater, who falls in love with a girl at the end....That's the biggest joke of the entire movie. Yngvar

Blast from the Past
Director: Hugh Wilson
USA: 1999: 106 mins:
With:
Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Sissy Spacek, Christopher Walken, Dave Foley, Joey Slotnik:

This is a very simple story of a boy call Adam (played wonderfully by Brendan Fraser) who is brought up in a bomb shelter and has never seen anyone but his parents during his youth. One day he gets to go up out of the shelter and go into the real world as the parents are low on supplies. He is very shy but somehow gets to meet girl of his dreams Eve (played by Alicia Silverstone) and the guy she lives with who is gay (played by Kid in the Hall Dave Foley). Find out if Adam ends up with Eva or her gay friend (I know which one I would like to see him end up with). The gay character is well done and is a stand out part in this slightly innocent but good film. Phillip

Blessed are those who thirst
(Original title: Salige er de som tørster)
Director: Carl Christian Kønig
Norway: 1997: 112 mins.: Gay central character
With Kjersti Elvik, Nils Ole Oftebro, Andrine Sæther:

Semi-closeted lesbian cop Hanne Wilhelmsen investigates several cases of rape and murder in and around Oslo. All but one of the victims are immigrant girls; the only survivor is found strapped to her bed in a sorry state. The killer seems to have racist motives, and leaves strange numbers written in blood on the crime scene.

This is a police mystery that gradually turns into a violent revenge thriller. It looks like an extended commercial, shot in a flashy, rapid style. A bit hard to follow, but the ending is very exciting!  Hanne, the heroine, is a tough, no-nonsense cop who just happens to be lesbian. Her girlfriend, Cecilie, actually complains that Hanne is a workaholic with no time for bed sheet action. So, there is precious little sex in this movie, I'm afraid!

But it's simply great watching a thriller where the main character's sexual preference isn't billboarded, but simply taken for granted. They should make more movies like this one.

Oh, and it's based on a best-seller novel by celebrity writer Anne Holt. Yngvar

Blind Faith
Director: Ernest Dickerson
USA, 1998: 117 min: Gay main character:
With: Courtney B. Vance& Charles Dutton and a great cast ! :

Oh my god – this film take you back to a period you would rather forget, it is 1957 and the Bronx. Racism is a part of America ( I still personally can not see how people were such racists – for me a person is good or bad but it is not depending on the skin color !) So now back to the review a white (sorry I have to use color to explain this film but it is necessary) man is murdered one night in the park. A young black man called Charlie get arrested for the crime and he signs a confession but all the facts do not point to his doing the crime ! His uncle does not believe that he killed the guy and since he is a lawyer he decides to take the case and find out the truth. Noe of the family knows that Charlie is a homosexual, especially his father with is a policeman and a racist himself as he hate homosexuals. Is this why he signed the confession ? Go back in time and see this moving film. You will be better educated for it and the next time you dislike someone for color or race or whatever remember this film and stop it ! Phillip

 Bloodbrothers
USA : 1978 117 min.: Drama with gay character
With : Bruce French as Paulie, J.P. Finnegan as the Bartender and Richard Gere as Stoney:

This is a sort of outdated film but contains a gay character who is a part of the plot. It is about a group of macho friends who all have problems finding out who they are and what they want with Stoney as the one trying hardest to find his true identity. Along with all this macho stuff there is the bartender who has a gay son called Paulie, who he threw out of the house 3 years ago when he found out his son was a fag (opts he said FAG - a nasty word). Paulie has found a life without his fathers hate. Stoney´s uncle Chubby believes that the Bartender is sorry for having thrown Paulie out of the house and that Paulie and he should patch things up again, so he goes to Paulie to try and get the gay son to return home for a surprise party but will he succeed - see the film ! Phillip

With: Nathan Lopez as Maximo, Soliman Cruz as Paca, Ping Medina as Kuya Bogs (Maxi's brother), Bodjie Pascua , Neil Ryan Sese as Boy, Pepe Smith , Peter Anthony Tombasa as Peter, J.R. Valentin as Victor:

WOW this is a really good movie ! It is the story of a very fem boy who is 12 years old and already knows what he is and what he wants. He dares to be a fem in a land of machos and he keeps his head up high and accepts that this is the way he is and what he will always be throughout his life. Amazing !

Besides dressing as a fem boy he takes part in drag shows and takes care of his family. His mother has died and his father and brothers need a lot of care.

Then one day a good looking sexy policeman enters into his life and he goes after this man in every way to get him.

At first glance the policeman seems straight but little by little you are not sure as his is definitely attracted to this boy.

To see if Maximo gets his man see the film ! Phillip

Bombay Boys
Director: Kaizad Gustad
India: 1998: 105 mins:
With: Alexander Gifford as Xeres Mistry, Naveen Andrews as Krishna Sahni (was in that great TV mini series The Buddha of Suburbia), Rahul Bose as Ricardo Fernandes;

Well I have just finished watching this film and I have to tell you I enjoyed it. It is the story of three young guys who come from the UK, USA and Australia back to where their families came from Bombay. Ricardo is looking for his lost brother, Krishna is looking to become an actor in a film and Xerxes from the USA is looking to find out if he is really gay or not.

The three are not very well accepted by the people who live in Bombay so it is hard to them to find an apartment until Xerxes meets a gay landlord who he has to bribe with sex to get the apartment. The three then take off in separate directors trying to find what they are searching for but end up stripping for old women in a fun scene . Then their landlord takes Xerxes to a bar where he meets a very handsome young guy and they go to the guys parents for a night of sex. He see the guy again but has a lot of trouble but afterwards Xerxes starts telling people that he is gay. So it is a coming out film too. I won´t tell you all that happens to the three guys but it is often funny and sometime melodramatic but just for the Xerxes story line it is worth seeing this film plus the guy are extremely handsome too ! Phillip

Borat

USA 2006
Directed by Sacha Baron Cohen
Spoof documentary

Borat! on Movies too gay?? Oh, yes - there is so much gay stuff here you won't believe. The title character, a Kasakhstani news reporter goes to the USA to make a movie about the country and makes a total mess of it all! On one occasion he watches the Gay Pride parade in New York and makes out with 3 of the participants.  Of course, afterwards Borat is quite shocked, he didn't know the men were gay. Apparently, having sex with men is just a way of celebrating in Kasakhstan. In fact, Borat is very homophobic, but you wouldn't know!
But Sacha Baron Cohen himself is obviously gay friendly. Watch "Talladega nights" for proof.

Boys briefs 2

Second offering in a DVD-series dealing with young men’s sexual awakening.

There are 6 short films here.

1...Backroom (Spain) We meet some guys in a darkroom, trying to get a quickie while their inner thoughts are played out on the soundtrack. The moral: Our bodies do one thing, our minds another. 13 minutes is a bit long for this kind of film. None of the guys appealed to me.

2...Chicken (Ireland) 2 guys playing chicken on a railroad track. You’ll want to see this film more than once, because you probably won’t get it all at one viewing. Fine little film, and as I love Ireland I really enjoyed the sight of Wicklow mountains in the background!

3...Frühstück (Germany) I did n’t really get the point of this film, which is concerned with two gay guys and
their female friend. One of the guys has a roving eye, while the other just want to wake up with the guy he loves and make breakfast. The men aren’t very attractive, and the film isn’t very well made.

4...Doors cut down (Spain) Now this is something else. One of my favorite shorts (see the letter D for
an individual review). Absolute class and dead sexy!

5...Touch (Canada) Director Jeremy Podeswa is quite well-known in Canada, and this film has

received good reviews all over. It’s a glum and joyless affair, as it concerns a boy who has been
abused in childhood and grown to like it. He has become a masochist, longing for punishment. After receiving
hospital treatment, he runs away from his parents to seek his tormentor once again. If you like the psychological stuff with a lot of inner monologue, this is for you.

6...Take out (Canada) A bit of uplift at the end of this DVD, this short is a fine piece of storytelling
with good performances. Actor/ playwright Daniel McIvor plays the older man in this hero-worship love tale about a pizza delivery boy (no..it’s not a porn movie!) falling for one of his customers, a depressed man on the
rebound after a failed marriage.

The films are hosted by Danny Roberts, a cute guy with frat boy looks. Apparently he starred in an MTV-
series called Real World-New Orleans. Never saw that one.

This DVD is worth a look, at least half of the shorts are winners! Yngvar

Boys in the Band, The
Director: William Friedkin
USA : 1970 : 117 min.: Drama gay homosexuality
With : Frederick Combs, Leonard Frey, Cliff Gorman, Reuben Greene, Robert La Tourneaux, Laurence Luckinbill, Murray Melvin, Kenneth Nelson, Keith Prentice and Peter White;

This is the film (and was the play) which broke the images that the heterosexuals had of gays and many gays had of themselves. For the first time on screen and in the theater they were confronted with the fact that gays are many different types of people and not all feminine as was thought. There are the whole rainbow of gay types in this film and they all come together for a birthday party. There are eight open gay men at this part and one who seems to refuse to come out of the closet. Great lines such as Emery (the queen in the film) saying "Who do you have to fuck to get a drink around here ? Maybe the film is a little dated in that most people know now that gays come from all walks of life but this was the film that started this way of thinking. It was a shocking eye opener in its day. A most to see. Mart Crowley wrote it and never really has another big success as this was. After Boys in the Band he wrote the beginning years of the series "Hart to Hart". Phillip

Boys of St. Vincent, The
Director : John N. Smith
Canada :1992 : 186 mins. in 2 parts : Drama:

Behind the walls of St. Vincent, young orphan boys are sexually and psychologically abused. In part 1 of this tale, loosely based on real events which happened in 1970's Canada, 10-year-old Kevin is the sexual plaything of the deeply disturbed Brother Lavin, while other boys "belong" to other brothers. When young Kevin tries to run away from his abusers, the police bring him right back, where he is beaten so badly by Brother Lavin that he requires hospital care. Brother Lavin, of course, refuses to take the boy to the hospital, and it is only the intervention of a kindly janitor that gets the boy the help he needs, and eventually, gets a police investigation started. In part 2, set 15 years later, the boys have grown to be psychologically scarred young men, Brother Lavin has left the orphanage and the priesthood and has a family and boys of his own. When charges are finally brought against the brothers, the young men have to relive the horrors of St. Vincent, and the price of justice proves to be very high for some of them. Phillip

Boys on the Side
Director: Herbert Ross
USA : 1995 : 117 min.: Comedy Drama aids friendship lesbian
With: Whoopi Goldberg , Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore:

This is sort of a girls road movie starting with Jane who is an out of work night club singer who decides to go to LA She is looking for a ride there and places an advertisement in the newspapers. Robin who is shy answers the ad and they take off together for LA They make a stop in Pittsburgh to visit Holly who is married to a drug deal. When they arrive he is beating her and the girls stop it but in turn he is badly hurt and in panic the three girls leave him there only to find out later that he is dead. As they get to know each other we are let into the fact that Jane is a lesbian, Robin has Aids and is trying to escape the sickness and of course Holly who is running away from the murder. The rest of the store is about the closeness of the girls despite their differences. Whoppi Goldberg plays Jane the one who is Lesbian and does a fantastic job of playing a Lesbian without the old cliché‚s. A wonderful film to see and sniffle. As strange as it seems Hollywood can also make good Homosexual movies if they want to. Phillip

Brain Drain
(Original title: Fuga de cerebros )
Director: Fernando Musa
Argentina: 1998: 95 mins:

Nicolás Cabré as Fideo, Luis Quiroz as Panta, Jimena Anganuzzi as Diana, Brian Forcinitti as Rengo, Erasmo Olivera asTimy, Roberto Carnaghi as Police chief, Enrique Liporace as Sosa and more:

This is a film that goes almost nowhere. The only saving item in this youth gang film is that one of the boys seems to be in love with the main boy who says he is American. Anyone who comes in between himself and the boy is almost attached and is handled with in his art of doing things. (the strange item is that tis boy keep dreaming of getting a girl which is opposite with what you feel about him).

There are no love scenes between them and it is just a feeling you get when watching the film. The main boy is a big talker – quite handsome, just coming of age and is trying to get a girl to notice him. Anyway if you do not have any real gay films to watch then this is worth a peek !

It has the feeling of a Passolini film where all the boys are trying to survive in life but it does not have but the real gay touch which his films had. Phillip

Breakfast On Pluto
Director: Neil Jordan
Ireland / United Kingdom: 2005: 129 mins:
With: Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Gavin Friday, Laurence Kinlan, Liam Neeson, Ruth Negga, Stephen Rea:

Most of the people i know who saw The Crying Game were shcoked at the full frontal n
ude scene (at almost the end of the film) that the she was a he ! Now for this new Neil Jorden film in 10 years and again a transsexual and Ireland and the IRA. This time we are not shocked as we know the main character from the beginning as a young man who wants to be a young girl so the shock effect is not there..None the less we are fasinated at the character. He somehow goes through life picking himself up when people hurt him both physically and mentally. Thus he is a very strong film character and one that you can look up to not matter if you like transexuals or not.

The story takes him from Ireland to London England as he finds his way in life and there are 36 chapters to follow his life by but I will not go into detail as it will spoil the effect of the film but I will tell you that the acting is great and the story line held me to my seat even without the shocking end which was the sucess of The Crying Game. So sit down and watch the film and enjoy your trip through the life of this young man / woman I did !

I hope we will not have to wait so long for the next
Neil Jordan film !!!!

Director: James Whale
USA: 1935: 70 Mins:
With: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Valerie Hobson, Ernest Thesiger, Elsa Lanchester, Gavin Gordon, Douglas Walton:

James Whales was the director of this horror film. He was a gay who was out long before it was accepted and because of this he was given this film to direct. Hollywood was just not ready for a gay director in this time period and I think the jobs he was offered suffered for this, but any how he somehow got through this film and gave his stamp on it and it does have a gay flare to it. Phillip

Brideshead Revisited
UK :1981 Bisexual : Gay : Drama:

Made for BBC-TV mini-series giving painstaking treatment to Evelyn Waugh's story. The first two or three hour-long episodes are dominated by the protagonist's schoolboy love affair. This is one of the most romantic school gay love affairs ever filmed. There is also a flaming queen who is trying to be "out" at an all boy school and what happens to him due to being out at an early age. This is really a very expensive production and wonderfully filmed in a special romantic way and even though the gay story ends and it become basically a heterosexual story with a war involved it is still is a must for seeing. Phillip

Brokeback Mountain

Director: Ann Lee
USA: 2004: 134 mins:
With: Heath Ledger is Ennis Del Mar, Jake Gyllenhall is Jack Twist, Anne Hathaway is Alma, Michelle Williams is Lureen:

"Love is a force of nature"
Brokeback Mountain is definitely the best love story I've ever seen! All the scenes magnificently prepared in this moving and majestic film, the photography is superb as well as the performance of Heath Ledger who should be lock for an Oscar.

Many could easily describe it as typical clichá of gay cowboys but Brokeback Mountain is neither a gay movie nor a reinvented Western. During the film one practically forgets that it´s a love story between two men and just thinks about it as the love history. Is a movie that spare in language and theatrics, a movie that says more in its silences.

Start in Wyoming high country, in the summer of 1963; Jack and Ennis first come across each other. Jack is an aspiring rodeo rider, sensitive and talkative and Ennis is a ranch hand who swallows his syllables when he talks and the words are pulled out from his mouth in grunts. They have both been hired to cowboy sheep in the Brokeback Mountain for the season. It´s not the easiest job as they have to deal with the elements of nature, coyotes, bears and herds of sheep and the harsh life of the shepherd live.

Soon they develop more than just a friendship between them when in a cold, lonely, drunken night as their campfire dies, and the biting cold drives them to huddle together a spark between Ennis and Jack raise their friendship to a new level of intimacy and they fall in love almost by accident. This spark will become a true love for the next 20 years.

Brokeback Mountain is not quite the period piece that some would like to imagine. America's squeaky closet doors may have swung open far enough for a gay rodeo circuit to flourish. Yet Brokeback Mountain is ultimately not about sex (there is very little of it in the film) but about love.

This isn´t  the typical romance. One side is that there are two men serving in both of the romantic leads, but it is also because there is a lot of depth to the feelings that are being portrayed. We aren´t  just supposed to figure out if the two really love each other, but rather you can see it in their actions, and what they do when they are around each other.

What else can I say? This movie will pull out of you your deepest feelings, mostly unknown. Just see it and enjoy it.

Tips:
* The movie was filmed in Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies.
* The screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana is extremely faithful to Annie Proulx's excellent short story from 1997.
Dario

Bully
Director: Larry Clark
USA: 2001: 115 mins:
With:
Brad Renfro, Bijou Phillips, Rachel Miner, Michael Pitt, Kelli Garner, Nick Stahl, Leo Fitzpatrick, Daniel Franzese

This film is by Larry Clark who brought us “Kids” which became know among gays as it has basically one gay scene in the whole film. Now the next from him is here and it is a good one but dealing with hard true story subject matter:

It is the story of Bobby Kent (played by Nick Stahl) a teenager who lusts after his best friend Marty Puccio (played by Brad Renfro) but since he is a closet case he can only arrange things like seeing gay porno during having sex with women and making  Marty to have gay phone sex with him and he even goes so far as to give his love interest money to dance at a homosexual strip club as he looks on and lusts after him. Finally after he uses his fists to often on Marty to always get his way a group of friends get together and decide to take justice into their own hands and they get him and take him to a swamp and they keep stabbed him and bashed his head with a bat until he finally dies. The friends end up in court to pay for their crime. A must see film!

Burnt Money
(Original title: Plata Quemada)
Director: Marcelo Piñeyro
Uruguai/France/Spain/Argentina: 2000 : 120 mins.
Wth: Leonardo Sbaraglia, Eduardo Noriega

Marginals are hired to rob a truck. Something goes wrong and they need to escape to Uruguay. Over there, the relationship they used to have will go into a crisis, while they need to stay hidden from the police. A love poem, in which homosexuality is treated kindly and honestly. The director Piñeyro, transcends Ricardo Piglia’s novel with a careful esthetical work, whose subject cruelty is not limited to a literary illustration. Claudio

With: Ohad Knoller as Noam, Yousef 'Joe' Sweid as Ashraf, Daniela Virtzer as Lulu (as Daniella Wircer), Alon Friedman as Yelli (listed as Alon Freidmann), Zohar Liba as Golan, Tzion Baruch as Shaul (as Zion Baruch), Oded Leopold as Sharon, Roba Blal as Rana, Ashraf's Sister (as Ruba Blal), Shredi Jabarin as Jihad (as Shredy Jabarin), Yael Zafrir as Orna, Noa Barkai as Ella, Yotam Ishay as Chiki, Eliana Bakier as Dalfi (as Eliana Bekiyer), Avital Barak as Dana and Lior Ashkenazi as Himself - Actor in "Bent":

I have read some reviews which say this is a version of Romeo and Juliet. I personally think it is a unique love story which has some things in common with Romeo and Juliet but it is definitely its own film.

It is the story of two guys who are from different worlds. One is Jewish from Tel Aviv and the other is from Palestinian.

They meet at the border of Israel where one is a guard and the other is trying to get over the border. The guard loses his ID and the Palestinian brings it back to him at home.

What occurs is a love story between the two of them. You know it is going to be difficult but they try to pull it off. The Palestinian guy takes a job in Tel Aviv and tries to stay with his new Jewish lover .

The film is well acted and I became totally lost in this love story. I laughed and cried and hoped. I can not tell you how it ends as it would spoil it for you but this film is definitely one of the best i have seen this year. So see it and enjoy.

I watched it in the original language and with English sub-titles as i wanted to hear the original language.

The director is Eytan Fox and has made many other films over the years which i really enjoyed and this time he exceeded all my experations. The actors (all of them) were very very good and I forgot entirely that they were acting – which is a great thing ! and the filming it really top quality ! Phillip

Note: the two lovers eventually live in Israel and the story includes their friends and their lives there. So with watching this film it was a way for me to understand how people live that country and their relationship with Palestinian which open my eyes to a lot of things I have never thought about.

BUSINESS OF STRANGERS, THE
Director: Patrick Stettner
USA: 2001: 84 mins:
With: Stockard Channing, Julia Stiles, Frederick Weller:

In this thriller a business woman and her female assistant get into a love you / hate you relationship. We are smart enough to know that they have lesbian feelings for each other much as the story lines in the 50´s and 60´s. There was never any real discussion about being a lesbian back then but it was still acted out by the actors (much like this film). So if you want to enjoy a thriller which has the lesbian story line to it but does not discuss it you might want to see this film. Phillip

Bye-Bye Souirty

(Original title: Adieu Forain)
Director Daoud Aoulad-Syad
France / Morocco: 1998: in Arabic
With: Hassan Essakali, Mohamed Bastaoui, Abdellah Didane, Mohammed Miftah, Nezha Rahile, Abdellatif Khamouli, Zohra Sadok, Zineb Smaiki:

A touring group consisting of an old man, his son and a transvestite tour through out Morocco bringing to different towns the wheel of fortune. This was at one time a very thriving form of entertainment but now is on it´s way out and they are not very welcomed in the towns. Transvestites are a sort of tradition.

This is a road movie with three people held together not by friendship but work. The transvestite called Rabbi does not become close to theson called Larby and the father who is sick and  was once a famous boxer.. To see their story watch this gloomy film. Phillip.

By hook or by crook

2001

Director / Writer: Harriet Dodge

With: Silas Howard, Harry Dodge, Stanya Kahn, Carina Gia, Cash Askew, Misha Klein, Miracle Malone, Joan Jett, Tina Marie, Kris Kovick, Machiko Saito, James Cotner, Nancy Stone, Jimmy Broustis, Carmen White, Sunny Haire, Samuel Sheng, Josh Zinn:

"By hook or by crook" is said to be a female Midnight Cowboy and is the story of 3 weeks in the life of a small town butch woman called Shy (played by Silas Howard) who goes to the big city and meets Valentine (played by Harry Dodge). This starts the story of these butches and opens up to the public the often hidden world of these women. The film is hard to explain but a must see on your list as it is a ground breaking film about people who are not fully female and not fully male but refer to themselves as HE. Phillip
